Spaghetti supper to benefit family in Bangor

Friends and family continue to offer prayers and lend their support in a variety of ways to all members of the Stanley family of Bangor.

You might recall that tragedy recently struck this family not only once, but twice, when two of the three children of James and Cindy Commeau Stanley were diagnosed with, and are being treated for, cancer.

The most recent update is that 14-year-old Jessica Stanley has been able to return to school, while 17-year-old Jason Stanley rests at home.

To help the family with its financial responsibilities during this time, a benefit spaghetti dinner is planned for 6 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Bangor Elks Banquet Center, 108 Odlin Road in Bangor.

The donation for the dinner, which is being catered by Steve’s Stagecoach Express, is $15 per person. If you cannot attend but would like to help the family, you can receive more information by calling Laurie Ford at work, 947-3835, Ext. 502, or at home, 942-3437, or by calling Monica Clark at 478-4154.

Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate awaits all who attend “I Like My Moose Chocolate,” from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at Christ Church on Key Street in Eastport.

The buffet, which benefits Peavey Memorial Library in Eastport, features chocolate candy, fudge, brownies, squares, cakes, pies and a variety of “concoctions and confections made from the darkest, richest, most mysterious food the world has yet to offer,” according to Pat Derry of Eastport.

Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the library or by calling Robb Cook at 853-6290.

And, while this is a bit of a late notice, if you would like to contribute a tasty chocolate treat of your own, check with Robb or Jane Cook at the number above.

On behalf of the Zonta Club of Bangor, Alexandra Turallo of Hampden invites you to attend its 2nd annual Basket Bingo fund-raiser at noon Sunday, March 7, at Rangeley Hall on the Eastern Maine Community College campus in Bangor.

Each prize will be “a quality, name-brand basket” valued at more than $100, Turallo wrote, adding that “special games and door prizes will add to the fun of the afternoon.”

While you are encouraged to call ahead to purchase tickets, they will be available at the door.

You can pre-purchase them by calling 990-3182 or 862-2762.

Proceeds will help support local Zonta charities including Maine Discovery Museum, the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, Good Samaritan Agency, camperships, scholarships and the club’s “adoption” of families for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“Easter Bunny Bucks” and “Easter Ducks” are available at the front registers at Wal-Mart on Springer Drive in Bangor.

Don Emmons reports that for $3.50, you can give an “Easter Dollar,” which is legal tender (adorned with the Easter bunny or a little duckling) that can be used anywhere.

It should also make you feel good to know that 100 percent of proceeds from the sale of these Easter gifts, which include a matching card and envelope, benefit Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare.

From Rena Richardson of Ellsworth comes one of the more unusual requests that I have seen.

Richardson is seeking a woman who has very small feet, and who would like to “inherit” some very small shoes!

Richardson wrote that her sister passed away recently, “leaving several pairs of Cinderella dress shoes, with heels, in Size 3.

“I would like to give these [shoes] to anyone who could wear them,” Richardson explained.

Not knowing what Cinderella shoes are, I called Richardson and asked.

She explained that the adult women’s shoes are named for the company, which is located in Boston.

Checking on the Web, I learned that for more than 50 years, Cinderella of Boston has been “the leader in women’s petite fashion footwear,” providing shoes in sizes ranging from 11/2 to 51/2 narrow, medium or wide, and which are “specifically crafted for a woman’s foot.”

So if you, like Cinderella, have very small feet, and you would like to have these shoes, you are encouraged to contact Richardson “and make arrangements to pick them up, or I would send them, post-paid,” she wrote.

Richardson’s address is 50 Oak St., Ellsworth 04605, and her telephone number is 667-2250.
