BOSTON – University of Maine men’s basketball players Eric Dobson, Mark Flavin, and Kevin Reed were all named to the America East second team announced Friday at the championship banquet.
The Black Bears face Binghamton in the America East quarterfinals today at noon at Boston University’s Walter Brown Arena.
Dobson, a senior, is averaging 12.6 points and 5.7 assists per contest. He ranks second in America East in assists per game and 13th in scoring.
Dobson is the lone Black Bear to start all 27 games this season. He tied his career-highs in both points and rebounds when he scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds on Jan. 31 at Stony Brook. He currently has 300 career assists, which ranks tied for ninth all-time at UMaine.
Flavin ranks third on the team in scoring, averaging 12.5 ppg, and second in rebounds, pulling down 6.8 boards per contest. Flavin has scored in double figures in 19 games this season, including four when he surpassed the 20-point plateau.
He leads the team in blocked shots with 2.0 per game, which ranks second in America East and 34th in the country. He sits sixth on the UMaine all-time blocks leaderboard with 59.
Reed, who was named to the America East all-rookie team in 2003, leads the Black Bears in scoring with 14.6 ppg, rebounding with 7.2 boards per game, and steals with 2.19 per contest. He ranks second in America East in scoring and tied for seventh in rebounding.
Reed leads America East in 3-point field goal percentage, steals, and defensive rebounds. He is in the top 10 in six different America East categories. In addition, he leads the country in rebounds among players 6-foot-2 and shorter. Reed scored a career-high 36 points in UMaine’s win over Harvard on Dec. 2, 2003.
For the second straight season, Vermont forward Taylor Coppenrath was named America East Player of the Year. Coppenrath averaged 23.8 ppg and 7.2 rebounds per contest. His 23.8 ppg ranks fourth in the nation. He is currently sidelined with a broken bone in his wrist.
Albany’s Jon Iati was named the America East Rookie of the Year. He is averaging 14.5 ppg and ranks sixth in America East in both field goal percentage and assists.
Boston University’s Shaun Wynn was named the America East Defensive Player of the Year, while Terrier head coach Dennis Wolff was named America East Coach of the Year. BU is 23-4 and won the America East regular-season title after posting a 17-1 record in conference play.
The America East first team includes Northeastern’s Jose Juan Barea, Vermont’s Coppenrath and T.J. Sorrentine, and BU’s Jason Grochowalski and Chaz Carr. Barea and Coppenrath were unanimous choices. Binghamton’s Nick Billings and Stony Brook’s D.J. Munir rounded out the second team in addition to Dobson, Flavin, and Reed. The third team is BU’s Ryan Butt and Wynn, Binghamton’s Brandon Carter, Hartford’s Ryan Stys, and Northeastern’s Javorie Wilson.
