FORT FAIRFIELD – A mother and son were released from the hospital over the weekend after being extricated from a rental car involved in a slow-speed crash.
Ferne Ladner, 75, and her son Archie Ladner, 40, residence unknown, were passengers in a car driven by Bonnie Sandoval, 52, of Pearland, Texas. Sandoval is Ferne Ladner’s daughter and was not injured.
Ferne Ladner received injuries to her right arm, and Archie Ladner complained of back pains after the accident.
They were taken by ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle for treatment.
The two-car collision took place about 6 p.m. Friday at the Fort Fairfield-Easton town line on Route 1A, according to Sgt. Jim Chartier of the Fort Fairfield Police Department.
Sandoval’s four-door 2004 Mercury Marquis, a rental car, was traveling north on a long, gradual curve, Chartier said on Saturday.
Falling snow that evening created poor road conditions, he said.
Sandoval lost control of her vehicle and went into the opposing lane, where Leon Milliken, 64, of Houlton was traveling south in his two-door 1996 Pontiac vehicle, Chartier said.
Milliken tried to avoid the oncoming car, but struck the vehicle’s passenger side, he said.
Witnesses at the scene estimated the speed of both cars at 25 mph, Chartier said.
“Speed was not a factor here,” he said.
Milliken had one passenger in his vehicle, Darlene Legacy, 49, residence unknown. Chartier said she received an injury to her right arm but refused treatment at the scene.
All five people involved in the accident were wearing seat belts, Chartier said.
Ferne Ladner and Archie Ladner, who were trapped in the car after the accident, were extricated with special equipment by members of Easton and Fort Fairfield’s fire and rescue teams.
Chartier estimated damage to Sandoval’s vehicle at $12,000 and to Milliken’s vehicle at $2,500.
No charges were made in the incident.
