LEWISTON – It was pond hockey at its best.
There were three-on-twos, two-on-ones and breakaways aplenty.
The Fryeburg Academy Raiders and Orono High School Red Riots engaged in a thoroughly entertaining state Class B final at the Colisee, and the Raiders simply had too many weapons for the youthful Red Riots and won 7-4.
The 18-5 Raiders had four weapons to be exact: linemates Jordan DeLong (two goals, three assists), Kris Charlong (two goals and two assists), and Fred Apt (two goals) along with defenseman Nick Lawrence (one goal and two assists).
The foursome had combined for 130 goals and 131 assists in 22 games before Saturday.
DeLong, Charlong and Lawrence are seniors from New Brunswick in their first year at Fryeburg after being teammates in their native province. Apt is also a senior.
“They were the best players on the ice. I was impressed that we made it a game,” said Orono coach Greg Hirsch, whose Riots trailed 5-1 3:17 into the second period. “They had much more speed than we did and it showed.”
Hirsch also said the fact Fryeburg Academy had four prominent seniors while his key players are freshmen and sophomores “was a huge factor.”
Charlong, DeLong, Apt and Lawrence consistently beat Orono’s young defense corps in one-on-ones.
The 17-4 Riots had plenty of high-percentage scoring chances as well, but not as many as the Raiders. Orono actually outshot Fryeburg 35-25.
“They were very good. They had some of the best-skilled players we’ve played against,” said Orono freshman left wing Tony Raymond.
“We didn’t play our best, but we played good enough to win,” said Lawrence, who played virtually every minute while the top line played 85 percent to 90 percent of the time.
“I pick my spots when to rush the puck so I don’t get worn out, and I try to take advantage of the breaks when I get them,” said Lawrence.
DeLong and Orono sophomore center John Tuell swapped early goals as DeLong snapped a 25-footer over the blocker of Orono goalie Keith Hedrick before Tuell took a Raymond pass and rolled a backhander between Joe Mango’s pads.
But the Raiders, in just their third varsity season, scored the next four goals.
DeLong fed the unattended Charlong for a 15-footer from the low slot, and DeLong took a Lawrence pass and converted a shorthanded breakaway.
Apt and Charlong scored in the first 3:17 of the second period. Charlong beat an Orono defenseman wide and fed Apt for a far-post tap-in, and Charlong and DeLong worked a picture-perfect give-and-go with Charlong finishing it off.
Orono’s Derek Smith suffered a concussion and neck sprain when he hit the back of his head on the boards with 4:56 left in the middle period. After a long delay, he was taken to a local hospital and eventually released.
Orono cut it to 5-3 when Dylan Huckestein chipped a Raymond pass into the short-side corner and Jacob Roeder scored with a breakaway backhander.
But in the third period, Charlong found an open Apt at the top of the crease on the power play.
“Charlong can really turn on the after-booster,” said Apt, son of the Fryeburg coach of the same name.
“That was a huge goal. That quieted them down a bit,” said Fryeburg coach Fred Apt, who was impressed with Orono.
“They have a well-coached, hard-working young team. They’ll be back,” said Apt.
Travis Bryant answered for Orono by tucking one home after slicing across the crease with 8:44 left.
Tuell hit the post during a wild flurry before Lawrence sewed it up by skating the length of the ice and scoring with 2:49 left.
“I saw the far side open, but when I looked again, I saw the short side open over his glove, so I went for that and I happened to hit it,” said Lawrence.
