Scouts explore technology with Zoey’s Room

BANGOR – Girl Scouts aren’t just about cookies and camping anymore.

As girls become more computer savvy, Girl Scouts have begun to partner with computer-based programs.

So the Brewer-based Abnaki Girl Scouts Council teamed with Zoey’s Room for a tech education weekend for girls Saturday and Sunday at the Bangor Mall.

The 650 Girl Scouts had the sleepover to help the national Girl Scouts celebrate the organization’s 92nd birthday. The girls participated in a service project to provide birthday boxes to children at homeless shelters in Maine.

But that wasn’t all.

“We don’t fit the girl to the program. We fit the program to the girl,” Cynthia Brown, Abnaki Council’s spokeswoman, said Saturday.

The event also was the beginning of a new alliance between the Abnaki Council and Zoey’s Room creators Erin Reilly and Vinitha Nair.

Zoey’s Room began in 2002 as a nonprofit after-school education program and online technology club to encourage girls to build on computer, technology and digital media skills. Zoey is a technology-savvy 13-year-old female Cyphibian, who hosts a secure online environment for her registered girls.

Reilly and Nair developed the program after discovering research that showed girls became turned off by science and technology in their middle school years because it was perceived as “geeky.”

There are 24 middle schools in Maine that participate in the program, and if the pilot with Girl Scouts proves successful, the two plan to try to take the program nationwide next year.

“We get them interested in what they like to do,” Nair said. The girls have to register to use the site, so parents are ensured that it is safe, she said.

“It’s very important, especially in Maine, for girls to learn about technology and technology-based careers,” Brown said.

Girl Scouts already promotes a similar Web-based program for girls called Studio 2B. The program is not a traditional troop setting, according to Brown. Instead, it’s designed to meet the needs of the individual girl by catering to her distinctive interests.

“Zoey’s Room is a great example of the new options offered by Studio 2B,” Brown said.

Under the new partnership, Maine Girl Scouts can join Zoey’s Room at a discounted rate of $10.

The site’s message boards and chat rooms include Fab Females, a moderated online chat with adult female role models in the area of math, science and technology; the Tec-Trek, a self-paced online curriculum on how to use the Internet, how to build a personal Web site, and how to use digital media and images to make home movies and creative presentations; and Ladies Lounge, a safe place where girls can sound off on issues that affect them.

Active members also have the opportunity to win a Logitech QuickCam Zoom and other tech gadgets.

“People have so many different ideas about what Girl Scouts do, but what we do is very simple,” Brown said. “We commit to a girl. It’s about commitment.”
