The Bowdoin College Polar Bears and the University of Southern Maine Huskies will battle in a Round of 16 game after each collected victories in the second round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tourney on Saturday.

Bowdoin will host rival USM on Friday in Brunswick at 7 p.m.

USM’s only loss this season was to Bowdoin. Since that loss, USM has won a school-record 26 straight games.

In the second-round games on Saturday, Bowdoin defeated Salve Regina of Newport, R.I., 57-44 and USM defeated Salem State (Mass.) 80-57.

At Brunswick, top-ranked Bowdoin used a 17-2 run to beat Salve Regina.

Eileen Flaherty led Bowdoin with 15 points and Lora Trenkle followed with 10. Justine Pouravelis added eight points, eight steals and five assists.

The Seahawks of Newport, R.I., received 12 points from Meghan Barry and 11 from Meaghan Stapleton.

At Gorham, Saturday, sophomore guard Tiffany Jones scored a game-high 23 points, including the 1,000 of her career, as the Huskies outscored Salem State to register a win in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Jen Webster contributed 22 points, while Katie Sibley added 10. Sophomore Megan Myles helped with a total of 11 assists.

Meghan DePatsy paced Salem State with 17 points and Jennifer Tamilio had 12 more.

Maine drops weekend pair

At Homestead, Fla., the University of Maine baseball team fell to 2-6 after suffering a pair of weekend losses, 4-2 to Mount St. Mary on Sunday and 9-8 to Wagner in 10 innings on Saturday.

On Sunday, Mount St. Mary scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for the victory.

“Late in the game we walked a couple of guys, which hurt us,” said Maine coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “The walks and not playing a clean game in the infield are the little things that are preventing us from winning these close games early in the season.”

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Greg Creek. Creek added a second RBI with a groundout in the fifth inning.

Greg Norton pitched 7 2/3 innings for the Black Bears, while Mike MacDonald pitched 1/3 inning in relief.

On Saturday, Maine came back from seven runs down, but Wagner earned the extra-inning victory.

Maine was down 8-1 after six innings, as Wagner pitcher Jon Polonitza struck out nine Black Bear batters.

In the seventh inning, Maine scored a pair of runs. In the eighth inning Maine added five runs and had the go-ahead run on third base but had to settle for heading into the ninth locked in an 8-8 tie.

Wagner then reached Maine reliever Jamie Gratello for the winning run in the 10th inning

Sam Warner got the pitching start for the Black Bears, but gave up eight runs in 3 2/3 innings. Maine got solid work from the bullpen as Troy Martin, Will Carroll and Scott Robinson did not give up a run in 5 1/3 innings.

Jason Houser, Mike Ferriggi and Matt McGraw each had two hits for Maine, with Ryan Quintal contributing three RBI.

Maine is idle on Monday before facing St. Joseph’s University on Tuesday.

Softball

Maine softball team swept

At St. Augustine, Fla., the University of Maine softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday, falling to Evansville 6-2 and to Central Florida 3-1.

Maine (5-7) resumes play Monday with games against Robert Morris and Evansville.

In Sunday’s game against Evansville, sophomore Amy Kuhl went 2-for-3 for Maine with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Junior Jess Brady of Jackman had an RBI double in the seventh. Senior Candace Jaegge took the pitching loss, and is now 4-2.

In the second game, Maine’s only run came when junior Lauren Dulkis singled home Brady in the third inning. Sophomore Sarah Bennis (1-3) took the pitching loss.

Women’s hockey

Maine advances to tourney

At Storrs, Conn., the University of Maine beat Connecticut 5-1 Saturday and edged the Huskies again, 4-3 Sunday, advancing to the Hockey East tourney.

The tourney is March 20-21 at Northeastern University in Boston where Maine will take on Providence.

In Saturday’s game, Tristan Desmet and Meagan Aarts each netted a goal and two assists to lead the Bears.

Karen Droog, Sonia Corriveau and Cheryl White scored the other three goals. Alanna Pfeffer, Laura Maddin, Karine Senccal and Kelly Law each added an assist. Lara Smart made 49 saves.

Caitlin Salazar-Reid shot in UConn’s only goal with assists from Erika Spaeth and Angie Wallace. Kaitlyn Shain made 26 saves for UConn.

faced 31 shots and saved 26.

In Sunday’s game, Droog scored twice for Maine while Corriveau and Desmet each added a goal. Desmet and Aarts each chipped in with two assists, while Law and Maddin had one apiece. Smart made 36 saves.

Leslie Hurlburt netted all three of UConn’s goals.
