VEAZIE – Councilors voted unanimously Monday night to support revitalization efforts at Greystone Mobile Home Park.
The park has been an “eyesore” to the town for many years, according to town manager Bill Reed, but is now under new management that desires to clean up the image of the site.
“What we’re looking at doing is improving the whole park,” Richard Moffitt, the park’s director of operations, said at Monday night’s council meeting.
Restoration talks began earlier this year when pipes froze at the park, leaving 60 residents without water. Even after spending about $15,000 in an attempt to fix the problem, residents still had little to no water pressure.
Moffitt and town officials worked together to create a temporary solution by hooking into the town’s water system. The emergency fix opened up a dialogue between the park’s director and town officials, and the council gave the OK on Monday night to proceed with the creation of a mutual redevelopment plan for the park.
“I think those people deserve better than what they’ve had in the past,” Councilor Roderick Hathaway said. He cited that there have been problems in the park for at least 40 years. “This will be a nice revitalization project for the town.”
Plans include paving and widening the roads through the park, installing fire hydrants to remedy public safety issues, and removing substandard housing that currently exists at the site. Townhouses, which would provide more stable tax dollars to the town, also may be added in the future.
There was no estimate of the cost of the project.
“There’s a lot of different angles that we can take in trying to address those concerns,” Town Manger Bill Reed said.
