MacDonald, UM stifle St. Joseph’s

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Mike MacDonald pitched eight innings of two-hit ball and Matt McGraw singled three times Wednesday as the University of Maine earned a 6-1 baseball victory over St. Joseph’s University.

MacDonald, a senior from Camden, surrendered only one unearned run, struck out six, and walked four to earn his first win of the season. He lowered his earned run average to 1.13.

Freshman Ryan Brown of Old Town pitched a scoreless ninth.

McGraw, another freshman, sparked the offense for the 4-6 Black Bears, who have won two straight. Mike Ferriggi doubled, singled, and drove in a run while frosh Joel Barrett of Brewer provided two singles and an RBI.

Nick Baldasari had a run-scoring single in the first inning for the 2-15 Hawks of Philadelphia.

At Sanford, Fla., Tuesday night, UMaine scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to beat St. Joseph’s.

Aaron Izaryk led the Bears with two hits and three RBIs, while Simon Williams of Portland, Maine posted two hits and two RBIs. Jason Harvey of Bucksport posted three hits and drove in a run, while Mike Ferriggi had two hits and scored twice.

Scott Robinson pitched 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief to earn his first win of the season.

Freshman starter Steve Richard pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and striking out six. Jamie Grattelo of Biddeford gave up two runs and three hits in three innings of relief.

At Clearwater, Fla., Kyle Mathieu had four singles and four runs batted in to pace an 18-hit attack that gave John Winkin a victory in his debut as the Husson College coach.

Justin Spencer had a double and two singles and knocked in two runs, George Tripp drove in three runs with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly, Josh Ferguson contributed three singles and an RBI, and Jason Folsom doubled and singled and had two RBIs.

Husson erased a 2-0 deficit with three third-inning runs and five more in the fourth.

Travis Tripp pitched six innings of three-run ball to pick up the win.

Glenn Dusablon had three singles and scored twice for Rhode Island College, and Chris Higgins doubled and singled.

Drew, Wentworth beat St. Joe’s

At Clearwater, Fla., Saint Joseph’s College of Standish dropped two games, losing 6-1 to Drew University and 7-3 to Wentworth Institute of Technology.

In the opener, the Monks managed only six hits. John Lister and Ben Muniz singled twice for St. Joseph’s.

In the second game, Aaron Cieslak singled twice and knocked in two runs. They were the Monks’ only hits.

Women’s basketball

Cedarville 79, UM-Fort Kent 38

At Sioux City, Iowa, freshman Brittany Smart scored 13 points and dished out five assists as Cedarville (Ohio) University defeated the University of Maine at Fort Kent in the first round of the 2004 NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship held at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.

Cedarville (32-2) advances to a second-round game Friday against College of the Ozarks. UMFK, making its first appearance in the national tournament after winning the Sunrise Conference postseason tournament, ends its season with a 15-13 record.

Cedarville earned its 20th consecutive victory, jumping out to a 26-8 lead and maintaining a 45-25 advantage at intermission.

The Yellow Jackets then held UMFK to 13 second-half points.

Kari Flunker, Emily Delimpo, and Kristi Beougher each added 12 points for Cedarville.

Senior forward Julie Clattenburg paced UMFK with 10 points and seven rebounds, and Dana Lemon added nine points for the Bengals.
