POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – The University of Maine-Machias did just about everything right, except take care of the ball while falling to No. 4 seed William Jewell 90-75 in opening-round action at the NAIA Division II National Tournament Thursday night.
The Clippers committed 10 first half turnovers to dig themselves a 12-point halftime hole they never quite could overcome. They finished with 17 giveaways.
The Clippers (22-10) pulled to within 63-57 in the second half, but could get no closer.
The Clippers, who entered the tourney ranked second in the nation in 3-point field-goal percentage, were true to form while making their first four 3-point attempts and finished 12 of 17 for a scalding 70.6 percent shooting performance.
But William Jewell guard Cam Cooper – who shot 50 percent from the field for the game – was also deadly from behind the arc. He nailed four 3-pointers in the first half and six of 12 overall en route to 20 points.
UMaine-Machias, which was making its second national tournament appearance, was led by guard Bayi Handy, who had 18 points.
The Cardinals outrebounded the Clippers 33-26 and committed just nine turnovers in the game.
William Jewell (32-4) moves on to play Huntington in second-round action tonight.
