MONTPELIER, Vt. – Let Nevadans have their flashy chips; New Englanders would rather use maple syrup to make a friendly wager.

Gov. James Douglas and Maine Gov. John Baldacci are betting a gallon of their respective state’s finest maple syrup – and various other specialty products – on the outcome of Saturday’s championship basketball game between the University of Vermont Catamounts and Maine’s Black Bears.

And while the wager is based on good intentions, it’s clear the rivalry between the two governors is percolating like sap in March.

“Initially, my offer was a half-gallon of Maine syrup for a gallon of Vermont’s, taking into account the difference in quality,” said Baldacci in a statement. “But in the spirit of fair play I’ve matched the quantity. I anticipate an exciting game Saturday and thank Vermont for being gracious hosts to our Black Bears and their fans.”

Though equally gracious in reply, Douglas couldn’t help slipping in a clever retort.

“This is an exciting rivalry between two powerful teams, I am looking forward to the game,” Douglas said in a statement. “But I’m also looking forward to dribbling some of Governor Baldacci’s syrup over some waffles topped with fresh Vermont fruit. I can almost taste that sweet victory now.”

Baldacci’s syrup will be made from sap collected from the grounds of Maine’s gubernatorial mansion. Douglas is offering syrup made by Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie.

The winner of Saturday’s game will advance automatically to the NCAA tournament.
