COLUMBIA – Two residents became Columbia’s two newest town officials Monday evening at the annual town meeting.
Sonny Beal replaced Donald Tibbetts as selectman, and Mary Ward took over Lisa Ramsdell’s school board seat for SAD 37.
Tibbetts, who had served as a selectman for six years, ran again but was challenged from the floor by both Beal and Ward.
Beal drew 36 votes to 27 for Tibbetts and nine for Ward. But as the position goes to the one who receives half the votes plus one, Beal and Tibbetts had a runoff.
That time, Beal’s 45 votes to Tibbetts’ 26 gained him the seat.
There were 73 voters who turned out from the town of 459 residents.
In the school board race, Ramsdell’s term was up and she declined to run again. Ward stepped up and was elected unanimously.
The town meeting was otherwise uneventful, said Town Clerk Mary Ann Nichols, aside from the adoption of a comprehensive plan.
“There was very little discussion on anything,” she said.
