Police arrest suspended Troy driver for OUI after stakeout

Bangor police arrested a Troy woman early Thursday after receiving word that she was driving drunk.

Officer Michael Jewett reported that at 3:10 a.m., dispatch informed him that the Orono barracks of the Maine State Police had called saying that Susan Smith, 43, of Troy was driving under the influence with a suspended license, en route from Troy to a business on Perry Road.

Jewett parked his cruiser across from the business. At about 3:30 a.m., Smith’s red Chevrolet pulled into the parking lot. Jewett followed with his blue lights flashing.

Jewett said Smith told him she didn’t have her license. She said she had had only a couple beers. She then admitted her license was suspended, Jewett said, because she was on probation for a previous OUI offense.

Dispatch confirmed that Smith’s license was suspended with habitual offender status. Jewett arrested Smith and had another officer take her to the station for sobriety tests.

Jewett searched Smith’s car, he said, and found several empty beer cans and one half-full. He also found a small amount of marijuana and paraphernalia in Smith’s purse on the front seat.

Smith was charged with operating after suspension and operating under the influence of intoxicants, but not with drug possession, Jewett said.

Bangor police arrested a man early Thursday after he allegedly drove the wrong way up a one-way street.

Officer David Bushey reported that at about 1:30 a.m. he noticed a gray car turn right onto Garland Street from Broadway, ignoring a clearly visible “do not enter” sign. Bushey pulled the car over on Garland Street.

The driver, Jeffrey Demarest, 25, of Bangor, told Bushey he was just driving from a party on Second Street to an address on Grove Street. Bushey said Demarest’s speech was slurred and his eyes bloodshot. He admitted having three beers.

Demarest performed poorly on sobriety tests. He was arrested on a charge of operating under the influence of intoxicants. Bushey said that a breath test at the station gave a result of 0.23 percent blood alcohol. Demarest was then taken to Penobscot County Jail.

Bangor police summoned a man Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly stole clothes from a Bangor Mall store.

Officer Myron Warner reported that at about 5:15 p.m. he went to J.C. Penney and spoke with a security worker there. The worker told him he twice saw a man, later identified as Aaron Rodgers, 23, of Bangor, take several articles of clothing into a fitting room and then come out with fewer items. When the worker looked in the fitting room, he said, there was nothing there.

The worker stopped Rodgers as he left the store. He returned the clothes, valued at $239.48. Warner summoned Rodgers for theft.
