A Brewer man suffered only a cut to his face Sunday after the bicycle he was riding struck a stopped vehicle on Wilson Street, breaking the car’s rear window. Brewer police said inattention and chili appeared to be the causes of the accident.

According to witnesses at the scene, Anthony Ross, 20, was attempting to eat a cup of chili while riding and didn’t see the vehicle in front of him come to a halt at a traffic light.

Ross crashed into the back of the vehicle, breaking the window and cutting his face on the glass.

Ross fled the scene of the accident, Brewer police said. Officers caught up with him near the Eagles Club on Atlantic Avenue.

Brewer police said Ross was cooperative about the situation, but he refused transportation by an ambulance. Ross signed a medical waiver and was released.

The driver, a 31-year-old Stockton Springs man, did not press charges against Ross, Brewer police said.

A Bangor man reportedly had his wallet stolen in the most unlikely of places Sunday: church.

Douglas Nangle, 41, reported the theft to Bangor police Sunday morning after he attended services at St. John’s Episcopal Church on French Street. Nangle told Officer Jason Stuart that he had hung his coat on a hook in the lobby at 8 a.m. and when he returned to retrieve it at 9:10, his wallet had been taken from the pocket.

Stuart’s report said Nangle’s wallet contained $20 in cash, a University Credit Union debit card and an L.L. Bean credit card.
