Maine baseball sweeps Niagara Black Bears pick up three wins

SALISBURY, Md. – Joe Hough went 5-for-6 with three doubles, a home run and seven RBIs to lead the University of Maine baseball to an 18-8 win over Niagara in the first game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The Black Bears won the second game 8-6.

SALISBURY, Md. – Joe Hough went 5-for-6 with three doubles, a home run and seven RBIs to lead the University of Maine baseball to an 18-8 win over Niagara in the first game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The Black Bears won the second game 8-6.

UMaine also picked up an 8-3 win over Niagara Sunday to improve to 10-7. Niagara falls to 2-11.

In the first game, Aaron Izaryk was 4-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs, while Mike Ferriggi was 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Ryan Quintal homered and doubled.

Troy Martin pitched five innings of relief to earn his first win of the victory. He did not allow a run while striking out five.

Reed Eastley hit two doubles and drove in three runs for Niagara.

In the second game, Quintal went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Greg Norton pitched five innings to earn his second win of the season and Jamie Grattelo threw two innings of relief to earn the save.

Maine’s Jason Harvey tripled, doubled, singled and drove in two runs.

Niagara’s Paul Solini had a two-run home run.

Ripon 11, Southern Maine 9

At Clearwater, Fla., Saturday, Tim Roehrig slammed a two-out, three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to break an 8-8 tie and pick up a win for the Red Hawks.

In the ninth, Ripon tied the game with RBI singles by Eric Cluppert and Dan Williams.

The Huskies rallied in the eight inning for three runs on an RBI singles from Nick Vadaro and Adam Lemieux and an RBI groundout by Drew Palmer. Vadaro had three singles and two RBIs, while Brian Marshall doubled twice.

Colby splits with Keene State

At Clearwater, Fla., Sunday, Vincent Domestico homered and Jordan Jenry earned the win to lift the White Mules to an 8-1 victory over Keene State in the second game of a doubleheader.

Keene State won the first game 4-3.

Colby led 4-1 after the first two innings in the nightcap and had nine hits in the game. Brian Liberty and Tyler Hales had doubles in the victory.

Softball

USM wins two

At Cape Coral, Fla., Saturday, Katie Mainville fanned seven and surrendered one hit to lead the Huskies to an 8-0 win over New England College. USM’s Ashley Woodcock had three singles and two RBIs in an 8-7 victory over Buffalo State.

In the first game, Christen Lachappelle hit an inside-the-park homer and Ang Cote hit a solo home run. Jessie Becher had an RBI single and Natasha Jackson had drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Renee Heath and Darci Holland each singled twice.

Britney Hinckley singled for the Pilgrims.

In the second game, the Huskies scored six runs in the bottom of the second to forge an 8-1 lead. Kristen Tong and Woodcock each hit two-run singles, while Heath and Becher each drove in a run.

Lindsey Mathies doubled and plated two runs for the Bengals.
