BANGOR – Don’t tell the East C-D girls senior all-stars that they’re a bit height-challenged. They already know it.
“We’re short,” Shead guard Samantha Davis said with a laugh.
But it didn’t matter. The guard-heavy East team used its shooting ability and sound defense against a much taller West squad to earn a 47-45 victory in the Maine McDonald’s senior all-star game at Husson College’s Newman Gym Saturday morning.
In the afternoon A-B girls all-star game, the team from the West – again, much taller than the East stars – used first- and fourth-quarter runs while dominating the boards to post a 75-51 win.
In the C-D game, some of the smallest players on the East roster seemed to make the most difference for the winners.
Kaitlyn Leeman, a 5-foot-2 Woodland guard, and 5-5 Shead of Eastport guard Samantha Davis each scored 15 points. They combined to go 11-for-18 from the floor.
Davis hit three of her four 3-point attempts and the East was 5-for-10 from behind the arc.
“We were just trying to run with the ball,” Davis said. “We played the [East] A-B team last week and they kicked our butts. They’re stronger than we were, and that got us ready.”
Stephanie Hood, a 5-6 guard from Mount Abram of Strong, was the shortest West player.
The West all-stars outrebounded the East 35-31. Anna Warner, a 5-9 Winthrop forward, had seven rebounds for the West, while Katahdin of Stacyville’s K.C. Duffy-Stanley, a 5-5 guard, led the East with six.
Duffy-Stanley scored only three points, but all three came at the free-throw line in the final minute of the game.
The teams kept it close through the first half, which ended with five unanswered points from the West for a 24-19 lead. The West was up by as many as seven in the third, but a jumper by Stearns of Millinocket’s Leslie Osborne, a free throw from Kristin Hersom of Lee, and a Davis 3-pointer cut the lead to one point.
Davis hit a baseline drive with about 30 seconds left in the third to put the East up, and it never got behind again.
Waynflete of Portland’s Noelle Surette drained a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the game to finish with a team-high eight points.
The East did a good job of shutting down 6-1 Khalilah Ummah. The Waynflete standout had seven points and six rebounds.
“The kids on my [Waynflete] team know Khalilah’s the key, but there are a lot of kids out there who play on teams without post players, so they don’t know how to look inside,” said West coach Jan Veinot, who coaches the Flyers. “Passing into the post is a skill and a habit.”
So who was the tallest East player? That was the 5-11 Hersom, but Lee has traditionally used her as a guard.
“I’m not used to doing that, but I did it in practice and it wasn’t that bad,” she said. “They wanted me to pull [Ummah] out. We knew we just had to run the ball.”
In the A-B game, the West all-stars didn’t take a 3-point shot in the game, instead relying on their tough post players and transition game.
The West all-stars rolled out to a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, and outscored the East 25-18 in the third quarter to put it away.
The West went on a 10-0 run in the first quarter for a 16-4 lead; in the fourth the West stars scored nine straight for a 28-point lead.
“I think we definitely ran the floor, transition basketball a little stronger than them, [scored] a bunch of layups,” Deering of Portland coach Mike D’Andrea said. “We got up and down the floor a little better than they did.”
Deering 6-3 center Megan Urban led the rebounding charge with eight as the West outrebounded the East 52-20. The West racked up 20 offensive boards.
Greely of Cumberland Center’s Abby Marstaller, a 6-0 forward who was a Miss Maine Basketball finalist, had seven rebounds.
Urban’s 16 points led West players in double figures. Gray-New Gloucester’s Josalee Danieli, a 5-11 forward, scored 12. McAuley of Portland center Vanessa Lux (6-2) had 11 points and six rebounds.
Three East players had three rebounds apiece. The East’s two tallest players were Belfast’s Kate Bailey and Mount Ararat of Topsham’s Erin Johnson, both of whom are listed at 6-0.
“They’re huge,” said Presque Isle’s Michelle Post, a 5-5 guard who had a team-high 10 points. “They had no small people at all.”
Bangor’s Laura Clarke scored nine points and Hampden’s Johanna Ghiringhelli, an exchange student from Paraguay, scored all eight of her points in the third quarter.
“We didn’t really have any set offense, we just planned on having a good time, which it was,” Post said. “I had a good time. The competition was fun.”
The East all-stars were without Erika Stupinski, who was named Miss Basketball Friday night. The Mount Ararat star is coming back from a shoulder injury and did not play.
