Conservation groups to raise awareness

DOVER-FOXCROFT- Several different organizations will work together this spring to raise conservation awareness.

Since Earth Day is April 22 this year, and Stewardship Week is from April 25 to May 2, the Piscataquis Observer will accept entries to its Earth Day Ideas contest. The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District will help judge the winning entries. Winners will receive prizes courtesy of the Piscataquis Observer and their ideas will be published. Entry sheets are available at both the newspaper and district offices.

Conservation districts from across the state will travel to the State House in Augusta on April 2 to celebrate District Day in the Hall of Flags. Each district will have a display featuring programs available in their individual counties. There also will be a display for the Maine Association of Conservation Districts. Handouts and prize drawings will be offered.

The Piscataquis County Soil and Water District will hold its annual tree and shrub sale on May 1. The order deadline for most items is March 25, but marking flags, birdhouses and topographical maps are always available for purchase on site.

The district’s annual trout sale pick-up will be at noon, May 15, with a May 7 order deadline.

The district also will conduct its first Conservation Yard Sale this spring to encourage residents to reduce, reuse and recycle. Those interested in renting space or donating items should call the office. Proceeds will support conservation education programs offered to the public each year.
