Bangor police summoned a man early Monday after finding he was carrying a hammer in his waistband.

Officer Shawn Green said he and other officers went to the Airport One Stop on Griffin Road, where an unidentified person had called 911 to report that people were yelling nearby.

Green said the officers stopped two men they found walking in the area. One of the men, David Ackley, 24, of Bangor, said his girlfriend had just been “freaking out,” but she was OK. An officer verified that the woman was all right, Green said.

Green said he asked Ackley if he had any weapons. When Ackley said nothing, Green started to pat him down. Ackley then admitted he had a hammer, which he carried for his own protection.

Green said the handle of the hammer was tucked into Ackley’s pants. Ackley said he usually wore his jacket so it covered the head of the hammer.

Green summoned Ackley for carrying a concealed weapon.

A Bangor man was arrested Monday morning after he allegedly beat his girlfriend’s head against the floor.

Bangor police Officer Jason Stuart reported that at about 7:30 a.m. he and other officers went to an Elm Street residence for a report of a domestic assault in progress.

Stuart said Christopher Burton, 35, of Bangor met them at the door and said he and his girlfriend had had an argument. The girlfriend, however, had marks and scrapes on her forehead and eye, Stuart said. She told Stuart that Burton started arguing with her because he was afraid she was going to leave him and take their son.

She said Burton hit her in the arm, knocked her down, and then grabbed her by her hair and struck her head against the floor several times. She said that when she called 911 Burton said, “Great, now you’re going to send me to jail.”

Stuart said Burton denied all of his girlfriend’s accusations. Their son, however, backed up the woman’s account.

Burton was arrested and charged with domestic assault.

A Veazie woman was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center after a van ran a red light and struck her car Monday afternoon in Veazie.

Veazie police Sgt. Robert Gould said Kimberley Fitzpatrick, 34, of Veazie was crossing State Street from the Chase Road when a van driven by Matthew Vilasulo, 23, of Holden struck the left side of her car. Gould said Vilasulo had a red light.

Fitzpatrick had to be removed from her car with an extrication device, Gould said. She was then taken to EMMC.

The car was totaled, Gould said, but the van was able to run despite front-end damage. There are no charges in this case.

Brewer police arrested a woman early Monday after she allegedly ran a flashing red light.

Officer Nelson Feero reported that at about 1:30 a.m. he saw a car drive through the light at the intersection of North Main and Wilson streets without stopping. Feero pulled the car over.

The driver, Lauren Meehan, 21, of Brewer, had glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol, Feero said. She performed poorly on sobriety tests and was arrested.

Meehan was taken to Penobscot County Jail and charged with operating while under the influence. Feero said Meehan’s blood alcohol test gave a result more than twice the legal limit.

A purse was stolen from a shopper in Old Town on Sunday night.

Old Town police Sgt. Michael Hashey reported that at about 8:30 p.m. a woman told police her purse was stolen while she was at the Hannaford supermarket.

She said two men had spoken to her, asking where to find jelly. When the woman looked back to her purse, which she left in her cart, the purse was gone. Employees looked around the store, as well as outside, but didn’t find the purse, Hashey said.
