Starr, Robbins help Colby sweep Middlebury

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Miki Starr hit a RBI single to score Michaelyn Bortolotti in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Colby College a 2-1 softball win and sweep over Middlebury College in a doubleheader Tuesday.

Colby also won the first game 7-6.

In the first game, Bortolotti hit a pair of singles and a double and drove in four runs for Colby. Essie Widlanski and Wendy Bonner each had two singles and scored a run.

In the second game, Colby’s Toni-Lynn Robbins pitched all eight innings, giving up just one run and two walks while striking out five. Bonner had a RBI single in the fourth inning.

Southern Maine wins two

At Fort Myers, Fla., Renee Heath hit a two-run homer to help lead the University of Southern Maine past Albright College in the first game 11-2. The Huskies took the second game 2-1 over Union College.

In the first game, Kristen Tong had a pair of singles and drove in two runs for Southern Maine. Melissa Henderson gave up just one earned run and five hits while striking out five through 4 2/3 innings.

Megan Colon hit a solo home run in the first inning for Albright College.

In the second game, Jesse Becher drove in a run on a single for the Huskies and Christen Lachappelle scored their second run on a Caterina Riitano pinch-hit single in the second inning.

Elsie Nichols knocked in Beth Carcone on a single in the seventh inning for Union.

Colby, Middlebury split twinbill

At Clearwater, Fla., Tom Salemy hit a pair of singles to help lift Colby College over Middlebury College 7-3 in the first game. Middlebury won the second game 10-4.

In the first game, Tyler Hales worked five scoreless innings for Colby College and B.L. Lippert doubled.

In the second game, Roddy Ames had three singles for the Mules. Brian Liberty added two singles and Travis Agustin doubled.

Southern Maine 9, Chicago 6

At Dunedin, Fla., Joe McGhee slammed a two-run double in a five-run sixth inning while Nick Vadaro and Adam Lemieux each added RBI singles to lead the Huskies by the University of Chicago.

Joe Ganley chipped in with a two-run double for the winners, Brian Marshall added an RBI double and McGhee had an RBI single.

Ben McCown smacked a bases-loaded double for Chicago.
