BANGOR – If the University of Maine men’s hockey team wins its first-round NCAA tourney game Friday night, then WABI-TV5 of Bangor will be able to show the quarterfinal-round game the next night at 6 p.m., according to a press release from WABI program director Steve Hiltz Tuesday.
Maine plays Harvard in the first-round game Friday in the East Regional in Albany, N.Y. That game will be carried by NESN-TV.
The winner advances to Saturday’s quarterfinal against the Wisconsin-Ohio State winner.
If Maine does not advance, WABI-TV5 will not air the hockey game on Saturday, and regularly scheduled NCAA basketball coverage will be shown. If Maine does advance, TV5 will pre-empt both live basketball games from 4:30-9 p.m. Live coverage of these games will shift to Bangor PAX affiliate, WBGR-TV.
It will be WABI-TV’s sixth consecutive year of providing live coverage of postseason Black Bear men’s ice hockey if Maine does play Saturday.
Saturday’s game is a turn-key production of ESPN Production, which is producing and syndicating all of this year’s men’s Division I ice hockey tournament games.
