Maine Maple Sunday a sweet treat for kids

ORONO – The Page Farm and Museum on the University of Maine campus will hold an afternoon of fun and games for children and a field trip to the University of Maine’s sugaring operation on March 28, officially designated as Maine Maple Sunday.

A video, “The Maple Sugaring Story,” at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 28, at the museum, sets in motion activities specifically geared for children.

After the film, three groups of children, sorted by grade levels kindergarten through grade six, will play games and hear stories. Patricia Henner, director of the Page Farm and Museum, said the program also will include Indian legends about maple syrup.

“At 2:30 p.m. we will drive out to the University of Maine maple sugaring operation on College Avenue Extension,” Henner said, where participants will take a guided walking tour of the university’s sugar bush – or maple tree stands – as well as tour the sugar house and enjoy a sample of fresh maple syrup straight from the evaporator and poured warm over vanilla ice cream.

To cover the costs of materials, a $3 donation per child is suggested. Registration information is available by calling the museum at 581-4100.

The museum reflects the varied aspects of farming and farm life from 1865 to 1940. Exhibits include poultry, dairy, 4-H and ice harvesting, a blacksmith shop, an exhibit by the Orono Historical Society and a gift shop located in an old general store setting.

A one-room schoolhouse moved from Holden and the Heritage Gardens also are part of the site.
