BANGOR – The future of University College of Bangor is one aspect of the University of Maine System’s proposed reorganization plan that has yet to be determined.
University College is currently under the management structure of the University of Maine at Augusta. Under the reorganization proposal, the administration of UMA will be handled by the University of Southern Maine in Portland.
The reorganization plan calls for the shifting of all two-year programs to the Maine Community College System and the merging of some baccalaureate programs to other campuses. University College has three baccalaureate programs and the rest of its offerings consist of two-year programs.
UMS spokesman John Diamond said details about the future structure of University College were left out of the plan “because of its unique role within the system.” Diamond indicated that the eventual outcome of the institution would be “addressed in the implementation phase” of the reorganization.
The reorganization proposal is still in the draft stage and will have to be approved by the UMS board of trustees when completed. The trustees anticipate voting on a final plan in September or November.
UMA president Charles Lyons said he already has scheduled a series of meetings at University College in early April. Lyons said Friday it was important to determine what the university system has in mind for University College.
“Merger is the word, though the Bangor operation is less defined in this plan,” said Lyons. “Bangor is UMA and UMA is Bangor. We need to know what really is intended for the Bangor campus. I just want to see what the trustees’ thinking was on this.”
