MARIAVILLE – Voters are expected to consider expanding the number of seats on the local planning board at their annual town meeting next week, according to a town official.
Administrative Assistant Mark Johnson said Wednesday that the town is considering expanding the board from three seats to five. Three of the seats would remain elective, as they are now, while the two new seats would be appointive, he said.
Johnson said that with only three seats, a building proposal can be approved or rejected by two board members.
“Some of the stuff is too important to have two people decide it,” he said. “We’re a small town but we’re growing pretty fast.”
Mariaville’s annual town meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Monday, March 29, at Beech Hill School on Route 180 in Otis, the administrative assistant said.
Residents also will consider allocating $160,000 from the town’s capital reserve account to improve the local transfer station, according to Johnson. He said the money would be spent on improving the facility’s recycling capabilities.
Johnson said people at a recent public hearing on the proposal indicated that they did not want all the suggested improvements made at once.
“There was consensus that this should be done over a couple of years,” he said.
People at town meeting also will be asked to allocate $125,000 to help rebuild a quarter-mile section of Route 181, Johnson said. He said the town already has $80,000 for the project, but needs to raise $45,000 more to qualify for $250,000 in matching state funds.
Voters “have to make the commitment or the state will go elsewhere with its money,” he said.
In elections, John Lacey’s term on the Board of Selectmen is ending, according to Johnson. There is one seat each coming up for re-election on the planning board, the assessors’ board and the school board, he said.
Nominations and elections to the available positions are expected to be made from the floor during town meeting, the town official said.
