OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Troy Martin, making a bid to become the University of Maine’s fourth starter, pitched a four-hit shutout in the second game of Sunday’s baseball doubleheader to help the Black Bears earn a split of their weekend series against New York Tech.

Martin helped UMaine earn a Sunday split with a 3-0 victory after New York Tech had taken a 5-1 win in the first game.

On Saturday, UMaine won the opener 8-1 but New York Tech took the nightcap 7-6.

Coach Paul Kostacopoulos’ Black Bears improved to 12-9, while New York Tech is 6-10.

In Sunday’s second game, Martin (2-0) kept the hosts off the board despite three UMaine errors. The sophomore righthander struck out five and walked five.

Greg Creek of Chelsea knocked in all three runs for the Black Bears, providing an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run single in the fifth.

Freshman designated hitter Ross Cantara of Biddeford collected three singles for UMaine’s only other hits.

Jelani Arnold singled twice for New York Tech behind Tom Park, who spread out five hits.

In Sunday’s opener, Joe Esposito pitched a five-hitter to help New York Tech prevail.

UMaine managed only a second-inning run, which came on a two-out, RBI single by Joel Barrett of Brewer.

The hosts broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning when Arnold singled with one out and moved up when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Andrew Karkoulas brought in a run with a single, stole second and rode home on Tim Smith’s single.

Smith and Arnold had two hits each for the winners.

In Saturday’s first game, Mike MacDonald of Camden (2-0) scattered six hits to earn the victory. The senior righthander struck out four and walked one, giving up only Ronny Reyes’ solo homer in the fifth inning.

Mike Ferriggi paced a group of four UMaine repeat hitters with two singles and two RBIs. Ryan Quintal doubled and singled with an RBI, Creek singled twice (1 RBI) and Simon Williams of Portland singled twice.

The Black Bears scored three runs in the third, including Ferriggi’s run-scoring single, to give MacDonald all the runs he would need.

In Saturday’s second game, New York Tech reached starter Greg Norton of South Portland (2-3) for nine hits and held off a late charge by UMaine.

Kraig Binick paced the hosts with three singles and an RBI, while Arnold doubled, singled and knocked in a run. New York Tech tallied five runs in the first three innings and added two in the sixth.

Williams posted two singles and an RBI and Cantara singled twice to lead UMaine. Joe Hough smacked a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the Black Bears.

UMaine rallied in the ninth, scoring the first run on consecutive singles by Matt McGraw, Cantara and Jason Harvey. Joel Barrett’s sacrifice fly plated the second run and Quintal doubled home another run, chasing Tech starter Jon Burke.

Williams followed with a run-producing single and reliever Jamie Roggenkamp threw a wild pitch to allow another run to score. However, he retired Williams and Creek to end the threat and the game.
