Hampden police traced a license plate number to discover the identities of two men they said stole bottles and cans from a redemption center Monday afternoon.

Sgt. Scott Webber said a neighbor of Tomcats Redemption Center on Main Road South took down the thieves’ license plate number as they fled the scene at about 5:30 p.m.

The registered owner of the car, a Levant woman, helped police contact her son and another man, who both apologized. The redemption center decided not to press charges, Webber said.

The two bags of recyclables were believed to be worth at least $30.

Millinocket police charged a man with operating while under the influence early Monday.

Detective Aaron Brooker said he stopped a Dodge pickup on Central Street after seeing it cross the centerline “a couple times” at about 2:30 a.m. The driver, Joel Ambrose, 43, of Millinocket, did not pass sobriety tests.

“He’s a real decent guy,” Brooker said. “He just had too much to drink.”

A convenience store clerk alerted a Bangor police officer that an intoxicated customer was about to get behind the wheel Sunday afternoon.

Bangor police Officer Brandon Vafiades reported he was in the State Street One Stop at about 4:45 p.m. when the clerk yelled for him to stop “that guy.” The clerk went outside with Vafiades and pointed out a white Chevrolet Blazer, parked at an angle in the lot.

Vafiades said the driver, identified as Hayden McCarthy, 37, of Bangor, had slurred speech and glassy eyes, and smelled of alcohol. A 24-pack of beer was on the passenger seat and an open can of beer in McCarthy’s cup holder, Vafiades said.

McCarthy failed sobriety tests, registering 0.22 percent blood alcohol on a breath test at the station. He was charged with operating while under the influence.

Police say a man driving drunk with a suspended driver’s license in an unregistered car knocked down a utility pole in Brewer on Monday evening.

Brewer police Sgt. Jason Moffit said that at about 7:40 p.m. he was called to the intersection of Lorraine Avenue and Edgewood Drive. A gray Pontiac Firebird with Massachusetts plates had apparently continued straight where the road curved, and struck the pole.

Moffit said the driver, Philip Brooks, 45, of Brewer, was drunk, and his license was suspended because of a prior drunken driving conviction in Brewer.

Brooks was arrested and charged with operating while under the influence, operating after suspension, failure to produce evidence of insurance, and failure to register a motor vehicle in the state of Maine within 30 days.
