New South Bristol resident Susan Potters still has her hand in activities of the Arcady Music Society.
She got in touch with me to inform readers that Arcady’s eighth annual fiddle workshop, supper and country dance, which is open to the public, begins with supper at 6 p.m., followed by “fiddling and dancing” at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at Hampden Academy.
More than 50 fiddlers from throughout Maine, most of whom are “young people, but many adults as well,” Potters said, “will be coming to workshops during the day to hone their fiddling skills with professional fiddler Greg Boardman.”
After joining the fiddlers for the public supper, consisting “of Albert Bean’s hot dogs, veggie and nonveggie casseroles and homemade desserts,” Potters wrote, Boardman will call the dance steps for you to follow.
“The dances are nice and easy; good for beginners and for children, too,” Potters promises. “This is a great event for families, and we hope lots of people will attend.”
Tickets, $11 for adults and $7 for children, are available at the door.
Reduced-price tickets are $10 and $6, and can be reserved by leaving a message at 288-2141.
Potters added that strings teacher Alice St. Clair and “a group of about 15 young strings players,” The Eastport Strings, will “be coming, en masse, to the festivities on Saturday.”
It may be painful after the fact, but it’s sure to be fun at the time.
“The Battle of the School Dads” is 7 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Van Buren District Secondary School Gymnasium.
Admission is $2, and all proceeds benefit the Gateway Elementary Playground Project.
Gateway School in Van Buren serves pupils from that community, Hamlin and Cyr Plantation.
The game features “The Energized Gateway Gators” versus “The VBDSS Middle-aged Crusaders.”
Playground chairwoman Brenda Deveau (who credits her husband with the idea for the fund-raiser) wrote most of the fathers have told her “they are excited” about the event, even though some of them “haven’t played basketball for a very long time.”
“It should be an interesting game,” she added.
With everyone donating time for this fund-raiser, including the coaches and referees, Deveau suggests perhaps, at a later date, you might be reading about an “all moms” game.
The HealthReach RSVP annual spring auction begins with dinner at 5 p.m. and the auction at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Muskie Center, 38 Gold St. in Waterville.
Items range from new furniture to gift certificates and antiques. Door prizes, giveaways and snacks will be available. The menu features chop suey and baked beans.
All proceeds benefit HealthReach RSVP direct volunteer expenses that include training, insurance, mileage reimbursement and recognition.
For more information, call Ruth Saint Amand at (800) 427-1127 or 861-3428.
Cindy Dunlap is chairwoman of the annual American Association of University Women used book sale, which is 8-9 a.m. “for early birds” and 9 a.m-2 p.m. for everyone else, on Saturday, April 3, at the Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono.
You are asked to use the Juniper Street entrance.
Book donations will be accepted during the day beginning Wednesday, March 31, at that site.
You are requested not to bring old textbooks or National Geographic magazines, reports Anne Hathaway, who added that any unsold books “will be discarded or given to charitable organizations at the end of the day.”
She added the sale features a snack bar under the direction of Dot Turner, with “food at very reasonable prices.”
Although the Warren Center for Communication and Learning’s third annual yard sale, to benefit its Voices to be Heard Auditory-Oral Program, is not until mid-May, the center is preparing to receive any “post-spring-cleaning” items you would like to donate, with the exception of clothes.
The center will accept items, by appointment, from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays, beginning April 3.
For more information, call the Warren Center at 941-2850.
Executive director Charles Chiarchiaro and supporters of the Owls Head Transportation Museum will honor its nearly 175 volunteers during the museum’s annual volunteer appreciation banquet on Sunday, April 4, at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.
For that reason, the museum will be closed that day, one of only four days each year that it is closed, thanks to the efforts of these very dedicated individuals.
For more information about the museum, call 594-4418 or visit www.owlshead.org.
