BANGOR – After getting off to a good spot hitting in the eighth spot in the Colby College lineup, sophomore center fielder Travis Agustin was moved up to the second spot.

“But I was struggling so they moved me back to the eight spot,” said Agustin, who had four hits in five at-bats from the eighth spot Tuesday to lead the Waterville-based White Mules to a 5-3 win over Husson College at the Winkin Baseball Complex.

“I feel more comfortable in the eighth spot. I see a lot of fastballs there,” said Agustin. “I definitely saw the ball well today.”

The Pearl City, Hawaii, native said it was his first four-hit game since high school.

He had two doubles, drove in a run and scored another while raising his average from .263 to .326.

Senior catcher and co-captain Eric Roy of Libson and freshman left fielder Brian Liberty had three hits apiece in Colby’s 16-hit attack. Roy drove in an important insurance run in the seventh inning and singled and scored his second run of the game in the ninth.

Leadoff hitter Liberty scored twice for the 3-10 Mules, who were playing their northern opener after their spring trip to Florida. Rodney Ames had two hits.

Justin Spencer and Kyle Mathieu had three hits apiece for 8-6 Husson. Spencer tripled home a run and scored another.

“Our hitting is coming around much better than it did last year. Up and down our lineup, we can hit the ball pretty well,” said Agustin.

“This was a great way to kick off our northern schedule,” said Roy. “We knew we were better than the way we played in Florida. We swung the bats and stayed positive. If you do that, good things will happen.”

The telling statistic was Colby went 9-for-23 with men on base (.391) while Husson went 3-for-20 (.150).

“They hit when it counted and we didn’t. We had our chances,” said Husson first-year coach John Winkin.

“We left too many men on base [10],” said Husson’s Spencer.

Singles by Roy and Carr and Agustin’s two-out base hit produced a second-inning run and Colby made it 3-0 in the fifth on singles by Agustin, Liberty, Vince Domestico (RBI) and Tom Salemy (RBI).

Husson answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on Spencer’s RBI triple to left-center and Aaron Brideau’s sacrifice fly.

Liberty’s leadoff double and Roy’s two-out RBI single to right-center made it 4-2 in the seventh but a walk, Spencer’s base hit and Brideau’s sacrifice fly got that one back in the bottom of the seventh.

Colby got an unearned run in the ninth on singles by Roy and Ames and Husson first baseman Mathieu’s throwing error.

Freshman righty Robert Rosenbaum pitched six innings of six-hit, two-run baseball for his first win. Phil Geiger, Robert Jacobs and Jack Peet each pitched an inning in relief and Peet picked up his second save.

Chris Sargent allowed 11 hits and four runs in six innings and was charged with the loss.
