PORTLAND – An Auburn man who drove out on a frozen pond Monday for some late-season ice fishing found out the hard way what warm spring weather has done to the ice.
Thomas Hoy, 48, drove his car onto Panther Pond near Raymond. The ice supported the vehicle’s weight for a while, and he got out before it went through the ice. Game Warden Jason Luce said ice that goes through cycles of freezing and thawing can get honeycombed and weak.
Hoy has 30 days to get his car out of the pond.
