Child-care vouchers

The Resource Development Center at Penquis Community Action Program is accepting applications for the voucher program to help income-eligible families that are working or going to school pay for child-care expenses. The vouchers may be used in a variety of child-care settings, including family child care, child-care centers and friend or relative child care, if the caregiver passes background checks.

Families of two may earn as much as $33,770 and a family of four may earn as much as $49,661 to qualify for child-care assistance.

Hearing center yard sale

The Warren Center for Communication and Learning is seeking donations, volunteers and business sponsors for its third annual yard sale set for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, in the Warren Center parking lot, 175 Union St., Bangor, to benefit the Voices to be Heard auditory-oral program at the Warren Center.

Items to be donated to the yard sale will be accepted by appointment from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays, beginning April 3. No clothing donations will be accepted. Drop-off donations will be accepted 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. beginning Monday, May 10. For more information, inquire at the reception desk or call 941-2850.

Business sponsors will be thanked in the Warren Center newsletter, on the yard sale page of the center’s Web site, and on T-shirts worn by staff and volunteers during the yard sale. T-shirts also will be given to new participants and their families in the Voices to be Heard program throughout the year.

Tree and shrub sale

BANGOR – The Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for its 2004 Wildlife Tree and Shrub Sale. They offer a wide variety of shade trees, evergreen trees, ground covers, hedges and shrubs. They also offer fruit trees and shrubs including apple, crabapple, cherry, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. All orders must be received by April 2.

Proceeds will be used to promote conservation and the wise use of soil, water and other natural resources. For information on the sale or district programs, call 990-3676 or visit www.penobscotswcd.org.

Wicked good dinnah

Tickets for A Wicked Good Spaghetti Dinnah to benefit displaced millworkers and families in Brewer and Lincoln on 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, are now on sale. The event, co-sponsored by Care Development of Maine and Eastern Maine Community College, will be held at EMCC’s Rangeley Hall on Sylvan Road. Advance tickets may be purchased in person at the Bangor office of Care Development of Maine, 970 Illinois Ave., 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Tickets are $7, $3 for children 10 and under.

“When the mills closed,” said Alicia Nichols, director of development at Care Development of Maine, “we learned that some of our foster parents in those communities lost their jobs. We wanted to do something for our families as well as for other affected Bangor and Lincoln millworkers’ families.”

The event includes entertainment by the Memphis Belles and the Bellhops, featuring Pat Cummings, Penny Weinstein, Darlene Mogul, Tyke McKay and Chuck Somers, who will perform at 6 p.m. WABI-TV 5 will broadcast live reports from the benefit between 5 and 6 p.m. and U.S. Rep. Michael Michaud is scheduled to attend.

Bangor Garden Club

The Bangor Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, April 5, at the Hannaford Training Center, 208 Maine Ave. John O’Keefe, owner of Rocky Ridge Perennials, will present a program on Home Landscape Design. Community development

A recent Bangor City Council Resolve designated April 12-18 as National Community Development Week. The week is to call attention to the “many benefits that our nation’s communities reap” from the Community Development Block Grant program.

Those benefits include public services, economic development and housing programs in lower-income neighborhoods.

Authors at the library

David Lindley, a former editor of Science magazine and author of “Degrees Kelvin,” will give a presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Bangor Public Library.

Lindley, who holds degrees in theoretical physics and astronomy from Cambridge University and the University of Sussex, also knows a good story when he sees one. His book is an insightful look at the life of Lord Kelvin, who developed theories that formed the basis of the fields of thermodynamics and electromagnetism.

Author Andrea Constantine Hawkes will visit the library at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 8, to speak about her book “The Same Great Struggle: The History of the Vickery Family of Unity, Maine, 1634-1997.”

Arts on the Green

The Bangor Public Library and the Bangor Region Arts and Cultural Council will hold the second annual Arts on the Green festival Saturday, June 5. Theater guild

The Penobscot Theatre Guild invites community members to join their organization, which supports professional theater in downtown Bangor. A meeting will be held 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, April 12, at the Bangor Opera House, 131 Main St. Attendees will tour backstage with theater technical team members Mark Barrows and Karen Davis. Free tax help

Art exhibit

Bangor artist Sally Lesko Bates will exhibit at the Bangor Public Library in April. Bates’ oils and pastels will be shown under the title taken from one of her works, “The Sheep Who Had To Be Herself,” which sets the tone for the exhibit. Bates’ opening is set for 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, in the Lecture Hall. The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Adoption, foster parenting

Business ownership class

Penquis Community Action Program is offering Business Ownership 101 from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St. The class will provide an overview of the pros and cons of operating a microenterprise, what a business plan is and why it is needed, and resources for business development assistance.

Benefit concert

Singer-songwriter David Mallett is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at Brewer Middle School, 5 Somerset St. This is the fourth year that Mallett has been in concert to benefit the Brewer Youth Theatre.

Mallett’s “Garden Song,” a worldwide favorite, inspired him to write the children’s book “Inch by Inch.”

Mallett recently released “Artist In Me,” his first new album in four years, and it immediately became a favorite with critics and fans.

The Brewer concert will feature songs from Mallett’s new album and many of his old favorites.

Horse Fun Show

The University of Maine Dressage Club will hold a Horse Fun Show at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 25, at Puckerbrush Farm on Miles Road.

Kit Blockburger of Old Town will serve as judge. Ribbons will be awarded to first- through sixth-place winners and door prizes will be given throughout the day. Food concessions will be available.

Hampden

Fiddle fest and supper

Arcady will present its eighth annual public supper and country dance at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at Hampden Academy.

More than 40 fiddlers ages 5-75 will participate. The public is invited to join them for a traditional hot-dog and bean supper, augmented by casseroles – some veggie – and desserts.

Dancing begins at 6:30 p.m. to the tunes of the fiddlers, led by professional fiddler Greg Boardman of Lewiston. No dancing experience is necessary. Tickets are $11 for adults, $7 for children, and will be sold at the door. Or save $1 per ticket by calling 288-2141. Leave a message to reserve tickets.

Old Town

Easter Carnival

The Old Town Parks and Recreation Department will hold an Easter Carnival, 2-3 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at the Herbert Sargent School gym. Activities will include the bunny hop, coloring contests, pinatas, games and prizes. The event is geared for children age 8 and under.

Art at the library

Helen Wolfhagen of Orono will exhibit her watercolor paintings until April 21 at Old Town Public Library.

Wolfhagen is a former research chemist and University of Maine professor. Until recently, her paintings were in a realistic style, but now she is exploring a more abstract style with the aid of a MacIntosh computer.

Retired since 1986, Wolfhagen is a member of the Bangor Art Society and the Old Town Art Society.

Orland

Ice dive, rescue drill

This is the scenario: It’s evening in early January and two snowmobilers are crossing a partially frozen pond when one crashes through the thin ice and sinks. The second snowmobiler stops in time, but is unable to locate the first snowmobiler, who has disappeared under the ice.

Members of the Penobscot Emergency Response Team practiced reacting to that scenario March 20 on a pond in Orland in order to hone their ice diving and rescue skills. To learn more about the team, call Orono firefighter Mark Roy at 866-5064.

Flute recital

University of Maine music student Kathleen Sheeran will give a flute recital at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 4, at Minsky Recital Hall in the UMaine campus. There is no charge for the recital.
