Eastbrook town office burglarized once again

EASTBROOK – Police are investigating the second burglary at the town office in less than two weeks.

Sometime overnight Thursday, burglars pried open the back door to the town office, then an office door and a second door inside the office to get to the steel cabinet containing the safe, police said Friday.

An estimated $150 in cash was stolen from the safe, which was not locked because town officials don’t know the combination, according to Hancock County Deputy Sheriff Jeff McFarland, the investigating officer.

“They did a lot of prying,” he said.

McFarland said the same path was used by burglars 10 days ago, when substantially more than $150 was stolen from the office on Route 200.

“We gathered a lot of evidence at the scene,” he said, “and it’s under investigation.”

McFarland would not say whether police had suspects in the burglaries, but because of the similarities, they think the same people were involved in both break-ins.

The town office was closed at about 6 p.m. Wednesday. The break-in was discovered Thursday afternoon when the office was reopened, McFarland said.

Anyone with information about the burglaries is urged to call the Sheriff’s Department in Ellsworth at 667-7575.
