STORRS, Conn. – Bryan Maler’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in the winning run as the University of Connecticut baseball team edged Maine 2-1 Friday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
The Black Bears (12-10) were scheduled to play a doubleheader against Sacred Heart Friday, but the games were called off due to unplayable field conditions.
Maler’s hit drove in pinch runner Kyle Messineo. Tim Dempsey had reached on an error and advanced to second on a Marc Peluso groundout. After UMaine reliever Jamie Grattelo intentionally walked Mike Leonard, Maler singled and plated Messineo.
Dempsey gave UConn a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when he singled to drive in Dave Tokarz.
The Black Bears tied the game in the sixth when Simon Williams walked, moved to second on a Matt McGraw walk, and scored on an error by the third baseman that allowed Joe Hough to reach first.
Williams finished with two singles. The Bears managed four hits against the Huskies’ pitchers.
Maine starter Mike MacDonald of Camden pitched seven innings and allowed one run on eight hits with six strikeouts. Grattelo (1-3) took the loss.
The Black Bears are scheduled to play two at Northeastern in Brookline, Mass., today.
