BROOKLINE, Mass. – Miguel Paquette’s two-run home run in the fourth inning provided the margin of victory Saturday as Northeastern University edged UMaine 3-2 at Friedman Diamond.

The contest between America East foes does not count in the league standings, but the two teams meet again Friday and Saturday in a three-game conference series.

The Black Bears slipped to 12-11 with their second straight loss, while the Huskies improved to 9-6.

UMaine posted only six hits and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position while stranding 10 baserunners. Simon Williams of Portland stroked a two-run single to lead the Bears.

Brad Czarnowski and Brian Nutting each singled twice for Northeastern.

The Huskies broke a scoreless tie in the second inning against Greg Norton of South Portland (2-4). Tim Bush and Paquette drew back-to-back walks, then advanced on a passed ball. Arman Sidhu followed with a sacrifice fly, but Norton got the next two batters.

Northeastern added two in the fourth when Bush singled with one out and rode home on Paquette’s homer to right.

Norton allowed six hits and two earned runs in five innings, striking out two and walking three. Troy Martin pushed his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 14 1/3 by scattering two hits and three walks over two innings of relief.

UMaine finally reached NU starter Devin Monds (1-2) for two runs in the seventh. Aaron Izaryk walked and Mark Reichley reached on catcher’s interference. One out later, Williams hit a two-run single to center.

Reliever Jordan Thomson came on to walk Matt McGraw, but he induced a fielder’s choice grounder and a flyout to end the threat.

UMaine plays a 1 p.m. Tuesday doubleheader at Central Connecticut.
