ACADIA NATIONAL PARK – The Hull’s Cove Visitor Center will open Friday as park officials prepare for another busy summer season.
The visitor center will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Park Loop Road, which opened April 9, will remain open unless there is freezing rain or snow.
All of the park’s hiking trails are open except for the three where peregrine falcons nest every spring.
Park officials advise caution on the open trails because some still contain ice and snow.
The Park Loop Road will be closed April 25 for the park’s annual Car-Free Day.
Acadia leaders had initially decided to delay the opening of the park’s main visitor center in Hull’s Cove in Bar Harbor for a month as a cost-saving move to balance the park budget.
Officials reversed that decision last week after receiving a dictum from the National Park Service telling parks not to cut back on services that are visible to the public.
The park will hire fewer summer workers this year and impose several other austerity measures to make up for a $500,000 budget deficit.
Acadia is one of the most popular U.S. national parks, drawing 2.4 million visitors last year.
