BANGOR – Husson College pitchers scattered eight runs over four games Saturday and Sunday as the Braves swept a weekend baseball series from visiting Lyndon State.
Mike Cowperthwaite allowed just two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out 10 to help Husson to a 12-2 win in Saturday’s first game. Husson capped off Saturday’s doubleheader sweep with an 11-4 win, then won two games Sunday 9-0, and 4-2.
In the first game Saturday Jason Folsom hit a three-run homer for the Braves and Justin Spencer hit a home run and a triple to drive in three runs.
In the second game, Spencer hit a grand slam to seal the game in the sixth inning for Husson. Aaron Brideau hit a three-run homer in the third inning as Folsom and Chris McInnis each hit a pair of singles.
Nick Merrill singled and homered for Lyndon State and Greg Rose had two singles.
In Sunday’s first game, freshman Chris Sargent allowed no runs, no walks, and just one hit while striking out nine for Husson. Adam Sheehan hit a bases-loaded double in the sixth inning and Josh Ferguson had three singles.
Travis Casey singled in the fifth inning for Lyndon State to break up the no hitter.
In Sunday’s second game, freshman Rob Webber gave up just two runs on four hits and no walks while fanning 10 through six innings to earn the win for the Braves. Folsom hit a home run and scored twice and Spencer had two singles.
Nick Merrill singled and doubled to drive in a run for Lyndon State.

Bates sweeps Colby
At Coombs Field in Waterville, John Ribas allowed just one run and struck out seven over seven innings to lead Bates College of Lewiston to a 12-1 win over Colby in Saturday’s first game. The Bobcats won the second game 9-7.
In the first game, Charlie Engasser hit two home runs for Bates and Nate Maxwell had a homer and a double. John O’Neill and Drew McKenna also homered.
Tom Salemy and Eric Roy each doubled for Colby.
In the second game, Engasser hit three doubles and a single for the Bobcats. Rob Maguire, O’Neil and McKenna each hit a home run.
Travis Agustin tripled and had two singles for the White Mules while Salemy and Andy Carr each homered.

Thomas sweeps UM-Farmington
At Hippach Field in Farmington, Scott Brawn hit home runs in each game as Thomas College earned a 9-7, 17-2 doubleheader sweep of the University of Maine-Farmington on Saturday.
In the first game, Brawn hit a two-run homer in the eighth to give the Waterville-based Terriers the extra-inning victory.
In the second game, Sean Brawn hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Scott Brawn added a three-run blast of his own an inning later as Thomas jumped out to an early lead.
Saint Joseph’s splits twinbill
At Ward Field in Standish, host Saint Joseph’s College earned a split Saturday, defeating Castleton State 14-4 and then falling to Brandeis 13-5.
In the first game, Keil Martin and Matt Prunier each homered and drove in four runs to back the pitching of Pat Mileski, who scattered six hits over six innings.
In the second game, Brandeis pounded out 19 hits off four Saint Joseph’s pitchers and built up a 13-0 lead before the Monks scored.

W. Connecticut sweeps USM
At Waterville, Anthony Puccio hit a triple, double and two singles with an RBI to help lead Western Connecticut to an 11-4 win in the second game. The Colonials won the opener 8-6.
In the first game, Eben McKnight had two doubles and a single and Justin McCulloch had a double and two singles for the Colonials.
Adam Lemieux and Greg Stacy each had three singles to pace Southern Maine of Gorham.
In the second game, Josh Coleman hit a solo home run for Western Connecticut.
Lemieux hit three singles and drove in two runs for the Huskies. Bourque posted three singles.

Softball
Husson, Johnson State split
At Castleton, Vt., on Saturday, Husson College split a doubleheader with Johnson State, winning the first game 8-6 before losing the second game 13-12 in 10 innings.
In the first game, Jennifer Hodgkins hit a home run for Husson in support of winning pitcher Taralee Webster.
In the second game, Johnson State broke 12-12 tie with a run in the 10th inning to make a winner of pitcher Sara Bose.
Carolyn McAvoy homered for Husson.
Both teams are 8-6 on the season.
UMF sweeps Mount Ida
At Farmington on Saturday, Lauren Stacey and Stephanie Moriarty each pitched a five-inning shutout as Maine-Farmington earned a 10-0, 9-0 sweep of Mount Ida.
In the first game, UMF broke the game open with six runs in the top of the third.
In the second game, the Beavers scored six runs in the bottom of the first to take control.
Thomas, Lasell split
At Waterville on Saturday, Thomas and Lasell split in a doubleheader matchup of North Atlantic Conference teams.
In the first game, Joy Ireland of Thomas gained her third win of the week with a four-hit shutout as the Terriers earned a 2-0 victory.
Jasmine Carey homered and singled for Thomas.
In the second game, Lasell scored the game’s final 11 runs in a 16-7 win. Courtney Corbett had three doubles for Thomas.

Colby splits with Trinity
At Hartford, Conn., Elizabeth Riley scored the game-winning run in the first game for Colby College on a throwing error for the 7-6 win Saturday. Trinity College won the second game 5-4 in eight innings.
In the first game, Wendy Bonner hit a two-run double for the White Mules and Miki Starr had a double and two singles.
Sara Dougherty knocked in three runs on a double and two singles for the Bantams.
In the second game, freshman Shannon Falvey drove in the game-winning run on a single in the eighth inning on her first collegiate hit for Trinity.

At North Dartmouth, Mass., Katie Mainville tossed a three-hit shutout to give the University of Southern Maine the 3-0 win in Saturday’s first game. The Huskies won the second game 4-2.
In the first game, Kristen Tong and Christen Lachappellete each hit two singles and knocked in a run for Southern Maine of Gorham.
In the second game, Ashley Woodcock hit three singles and drove in a run for the Huskies and Renee Heath doubled and singled.
Shannon Allberry doubled for UMass Dartmouth.
