Kata event for MDA
VEAZIE – The Eastern Maine School of Self Defense has scheduled its third annual Kata championship to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The event will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at the dojo at 1005 Olive St., Veazie. Signup begins at 9 a.m.
Individual and group Kata will be the activities. If there is enough interest, there also will be a weapons event.
Preregistration is a must but prepayment isn’t.
The event is also a competition to see which school can raise the most money for Muscular Dystrophy.
The school that raises the most money wins the tournament trophy, which will stay at the school until next year’s event.
The individual who raises the most money also wins a trophy. There will be other prizes given by the MDA for different levels of contribution.
The cost for the event is $30. All contributions are due at signup time the day of the event.

Sea Dogs trip
The Orono and Old Town Parks and Recreation departments will sponsor a trip on Wednesday, April 21, to see the Portland Sea Dogs, an AA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The trip is open to everyone, but children under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult. The cost of the trip is $10 for children age 12 and over and $5 for children under 12, and includes the game ticket and transportation.
Participants should bring a bag lunch or be prepared to buy ballpark hot dogs.

Turkey hunting seminar
MILFORD – A free turkey hunting seminar, co-sponsored by the Penobscot Valley Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and Top Gun Game Calls, will be held 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Maine’s Youth Fish and Game Association Clubhouse at Pickerel Pond outside Milford.
The presenter will be Nate Fenderson, a registered Maine Guide. Topics will include turkey calling, decoy arrangement, tips and techniques. The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be available.
Adult basketball league
HAMPDEN – The Hampden adult men’s basketball league will run Friday and Sunday nights, June 9-Aug. 1, at the Hampden Academy gymnasium. The first eight teams will be accepted.
The cost is $500 per team, including team T-shirts and awards for champions. Contact Kurt Matheis at the Hampden Recreation Department, 862-6451.
