Vernal pool workshop to include field trip

DOVER-FOXCROFT – A vernal pool workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. April 24, at the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District office.

Presenter Gordon Moore of the Maine Forest Service will discuss the natural history, conservation management issues, forest management, best management practice issues and proposed best management practices, as well as general information about wetlands. There also will be a field trip to a local vernal pool.

Vernal pools are small ponds that are most obvious in the forest each spring. Some vernal pools do not meet the statutory definition of wetlands. The ponds derive their name from the Latin word for spring, because they result from combinations of snowmelt, precipitation and high water tables associated with the spring season.

Preregistration is recommended. Cost is by donation. For more information, or to register, call 564-2321, Ext. 3.
