It’s spring if you can get into a cemetery and look around, so I paid a visit to Locust Grove Cemetery on Route 1A in Hampden.

According to Bob Hawes, if you take the southernmost driveway by the Sanger Tomb and walk in about 180 feet, you’ll come upon a monument to Capt. Bartlett Mayo, master mariner, Oct. 22, 1820-May 9, 1898. Indeed, the monument with the bronze plaque is off to the right from the driveway.

In 43 years with the Merchant Marine, the plaque says, Mayo made nine voyages around the world.

Mayo, who was married first to Mary Ann, and second to Mary Rollins of Orono, was the grandson of Howse Mayo and a descendant of William Brewster of the Mayflower.

From reading Frederick C. Matthews’ “American Merchant Ships,” Hawes found Mayo described as “tall and of commanding appearance, a fine type of the best class of American merchant navigators, frank and genial in disposition.”

Do plan to attend the annual conference of the Maine Genealogical Society, set for Saturday, Sept. 11, at Hermon High School on Route 2 in Hermon.

Ann Smith Lainhart, author of “Digging for Genealogical Treasure in New England Town Records,” and “A Researcher’s Guide to Boston,” will be the keynote speaker.

Lainhart is one of the premier genealogists in New England, and you won’t want to miss her presentations.

Gerald and Janice Gower will speak on “Maine Families in 1790” at the meeting of the Penobscot County Genealogical Society, 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, in the children’s story room, ground floor, Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St.

The Washington County Genealogical Society will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Lubec Historical Society on Route 189.

Membership is open to those interested in learning more about their family history, especially in Washington County and in Charlotte County, New Brunswick. Dues are $10 a year.

3258. PEASLEE-GRAY. Need whereabouts of Marion Peaslee, b. about 1810. He md. Abigail Freethy Gray, b. Sept. 5, 1810 in Sedgwick to Solomon and Bessie Black (Freethy) Gray. Abigail d. 3259. WHITE-ROBICHAUD-LEBLANC. Looking for the ancestors of Joseph G. White, possibly also known as Joseph Leblanc. He was b. 1874, St. Mary, New Brunswick; d. Oct. 15, 1957, Bangor. Had 12 children and was md. to Alice (Robichaud) White. Worked at International Paper Co. and resided on Mayo St. in Orono. His parents were Germain and Delphine of St. Mary, New Brunswick. Cheryl L.
