McAvoy helps Husson earn split

BANGOR – Husson College split a college softball doubleheader with visiting Thomas College on Wednesday, winning the opener 5-4 but dropping the second game 12-7.

In the first game, Jen Webster pitched a complete game and Carolyn McAvoy went 4-for-4 for the Braves. Sara Agouab drove in two runs.

Joy Ireland and Heather Johnson each had an RBI single for the Terriers of Waterville.

In the second game, Mistie Bickford had three hits while Courtney Corbett, Brandi Riley and Jasmine Carey had two hits apiece for Thomas.

McAvoy went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Husson.

Beavers sweep MMA

At Castine, UM-Farmington pounded out 23 hits in winning two games Wednesday against Maine Maritime Academy, 7-5 and 13-0.

In the opener, Liz Seubart had two singles and an RBI for the winners. Stephanie Moriarty pitched a perfect game.

Abbi Darling doubled, singled and knocked in two runs for the Mariners.

In the second game, Seubart tripled and singled twice, knocking in two runs as the Beavers rolled.

Sara Martin had three singles and three RBIs while Holly Tripp singled twice and knocked in two runs.

Jess Clifford and Natasha Scott singled for Maine Maritime’s only hits.

USM tops Babson twice

At Wellesley, Mass., the University of Southern Maine swept Babson, 4-2 and 7-0.

In the opener, Renee Heath knocked a pair of RBI singles to propel USM. Jessie Belcher had three singles and scored three runs.

In the second game, Melissa Henderson earned her third pitching shutout of the year.

Angela Cote hit an RBI triple and Ashley Woodcock and Heath hit RBI singles.

St. Joseph’s sweeps Salem State

At Standish, Dee Regan and Kayler Dowling each threw a five-hitter to lead the St. Joseph’s Monks to a 2-1, 5-1 doubleheader sweep of visiting Salem State.

In the first game, Dowling allowed one walk while notching four strikeouts. She also led her team offensively with two singles.

In the second game, Regan struck out four batters and walked none while Deborah Bain, Allyson Ferguson, and Leanne Morton each had two hits and one RBI.

UNE takes two from Regis

At Biddeford, the University of New England Nor’easters swept Regis, 7-2 and 2-1.

In the opener, Andrea Pepin, Amber Taylor and Karcha Turner each had RBI singles in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.

In the nightcap, Pepin’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave UNE the sweep.

Baseball

Thomas tips UMF twice

At Waterville, the Thomas College Terriers edged UM-Farmington twice, 6-4 in the opener and 11-10 in the second game.

In the first game, Scott Brawn hit a two-run homer to key the offense for the hosts.

Matt Pawlis doubled and singled while Jim Pierce added two singles and an RBI.

Tyler Jellison, Kris Garrow and Tom Danylik each singled twice for the Beavers.

In the second game, Brawn and Brandon Connors each hit a three-run homer and knocked in four runs for Thomas.

Oliver Pettingill had three singles and four RBIs for UMF while Peter McLaughlin hit a two-run single.

Bates splits with St. Joe’s

At Standish, St. Joseph’s earned a 7-0 win in the opener while Bates won the second game 5-4.

In the first game, John Lister and Nick Arno each hit homers to power the Monks.

Charlie Engasser, Nate Maxwell, Rob Maguire and Owen Miehe singled for Bates.

In the second game, Engasser knocked a home run and a single, knocking in four runs as the Bobcats earned the split.

Maxwell and Adam Worral doubled for the winners.

Ben Muniz and Aaron Cieslak each singled in a run for the Monks.
