About 230 of Maine’s young gymnasts will gather this weekend in Old Town for the YMCA state championships.
The competition, which is being held at the Old Town-Orono YMCA, starts at 9 a.m. Saturday when the gymnasts in Levels 7, 8 and 9 will compete.
Levels 5 and 6 will compete starting at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The Level 4 gymnasts will compete Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m. for ages 10 and up. Level 4 gymnasts in the 6-9 age group will compete at 2:30 p.m.
Ten teams will compete in the weekend meet. Those teams are the Bangor YMCA, Central Lincoln County of Damariscotta, Auburn-Lewiston, Mount Desert Island, Oxford Hills, Down East Family YMCA of Ellsworth, Bath, Greater Rumford YMCA, Old Town-Orono and Waterville.
The team from Waterville, which merged this year with the team from the Piscataquis YMCA in Dover-Foxcroft because both are coached by Dave and Carol Evans, should be among the top squads, said Old Town-Orono coach Heidi Martell.
Waterville and Piscataquis swept all of the age-group team titles in last year’s meet, she said.
But Martell has high hopes for her team, too.
“They’ve done really well,” said Martell, a 21-year-old junior at the University of Maine. “They’re gonna be excellent.”
Old Town-Orono was fourth in the Level 4 division but didn’t have enough gymnasts in the other levels to be considered for team competition. This year membership has increased, so Old Town-Orono will have enough people for the team competitions in Levels 4, 5, 6 and 7.
The different levels indicate the skill of the gymnast.
Any gymnast can compete at the state championships, but they must have competed in at least three regular-season meets or half of their team’s regular-season meets.
Next up for the gymnasts is the Northeast regional championships, which will be held May 14-16 in Waterville. Competitors must attain certain qualifying scores in order to participate at the regionals.
Admission for the state meet is $3 for adults and $1 per child for the individual days, or families can purchase a $5 pass that covers both days.
