Bumstock festival to offer diverse lineup

A musical celebration, time-honored tradition and, usually, a hacky sack bonanza. That’s right, Bumstock is here again. Now in its 33rd year, the weekend music festival hosted by the University of Maine will take place this year on Saturday, April 24. Gates open at 12:30 p.m. and the music starts at 1 p.m.

A far cry from its humble, grassy-field, rickety-stage beginnings, Bumstock has continued to grow in size and sophistication each year. Last year, more than 9,000 people attended the two-day happening. This year, trimmed down to one packed day, organizers promise 11 solid hours of music by 15 artists from Maine and beyond.

Alterna-rockers Eve 6 are headlining a bill that also includes local acts such as Tomorrow’s Retro Future, regional up-and-comers Jeremiah Freed and 6gig, and national hip-hop artist Little Egypt. There will also be a separate tent where concertgoers can check out area DJs spinning and scratching. Admission is $10 for the general public and free for all UMaine students. Students can pick up admission bracelets in advance from 10 a.m. til 2 p.m. Friday at the ticket booth in Memorial Union on campus.

There are, however, a few restrictions: This is an 18-and-older show and proper identification is required. No bags, purses, backpacks, water bottles or dogs are allowed. As it says on the official event Web site, “If you cannot bring it on a plane, do not bring it to Bumstock!”
