Massachusetts softball edges Maine

AMHERST, Mass. – Denise Denis’s three-run double keyed a five-run sixth inning as Massachusetts earned an 8-5 softball victory over the University of Maine.

Aisha Franke’s two-run single gave UMass two insurance runs.

The Bears capitalized on three UMass errors in the fourth to score three runs. Amy Kuhl hit an RBI double in the inning, while Brittany Cheney added an RBI single and Lindsey Tibbetts an RBI groundout.

UM-Farmington wins two

At Farmington, the Beavers got two shutout victories over Wheelock, 9-0 and 12-0, respectively.

In the first game, Holly Tripp slammed a solo homer and Mary Berry doubled, tripled and knocked in three runs to key UMF’s effort.

Stephanie Moriarty and Sara Martin combined on a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.

In the second game, Lauren Stacey tossed a one-hitter to help the Beavers get the sweep.

Tripp had two singles and drove in five runs while Chantel Saucier had a two-run single.

Thomas splits with Lesley

At Waterville, the Terriers won Game 1 4-3 before losing game 2 6-5.

In the first game, Jen Lane knocked an RBI double, as did Jen Couture for Thomas. Courtney Corbett added three singles with an RBI.

In the second game, the Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 lead but couldn’t hold it.

Kayla Beaudoin doubled, singled twice and knocked in a run for the hosts while Joy Ireland knocked in two runs.

Baseball

UM-Farmington sweeps UMPI

At Presque Isle, Zach Reed threw a five-hitter, striking out six and walking one, to give the University of Maine-Farmington a 5-2 second-game win that completed a sweep.

UMF won the opener 11-3.

In the nightcap, Reed’s run-scoring double broke a 1-1 tie in the third and John Rutkiewicz had a sacrifice fly.

Rutkiewicz also had a double and a single with two RBIs. Reed had a single to go with his double and Tyler Jellison singled twice.

Steve Galkowski’s RBI double and Brian Morrison’s double led UMaine-Presque Isle.

In the opener, Cooper Willard scattered eight hits. Tom Danylik had a double, three singles and two RBIs and Rutkiewicz contributed a two-run double and a two-run single. Justin Quimby had two singles and an RBI.

Galkowski tripled and singled and knocked in a run for UMPI. Josh Berry doubled and singled.

At Brunswick, the Polar Bears scored all their runs in the final three innings to earn the win.

Tom McMahon’s three-run homer in the sixth got it started. Nick Lawler added two-run singles in the seventh and eighth, while Jared Lemieux added an RBI single, also in the eighth.

Drew McKenna’s RBI double led the Bobcats of Lewiston.
