Ballard lifts Husson to 3 victories

NEWTON, Mass. – Carmen Ballard recorded three hits and drove in two runs to lead Husson College past Mount Ida 17-3 in the first game of a softball doubleheader Sunday. Husson of Bangor went on to win the second game 12-2.

On Saturday, Husson split a twinbill with Lasell, losing the first game 4-2, but winning the second 7-2.

On Sunday, Nicole Manzo, Carolyn McAvoy, Rachel Wing, and Sara Agouab each had two hits and two RBIs for Husson in the first game. Nicole Munroe had two hits and scored three runs. In the second game, McAvoy had three hits and drove in five runs for the Braves. Ballard had three hits and three runs and Rhonda Chambers had three hits and scored two runs.

On Saturday, Manzo had three hits and scored twice to help lead Husson College to the 7-2 win in the opener. Ballard added two hits and scored two runs. In the second game, Kelly McHatten had three hits, scored one run, and drove in a run for the Braves.

UMF splits with Lesley

At Farmington Saturday, the Beavers scored four runs in the fifth inning to rally in game two of a doubleheader against Lesley, 5-4 after getting shut out in the opener 11-0.

In the second game, Ashley Symington knocked a two-run single to key the UMF rally.

Lauren Stacey and Jamie Young added RBI singles for the Beavers.

In the first game, Kristi Cochin and Holly Tripp each had two singles for UMF.

At Waterville, Saturday, Jen Lane gave up just two hits and three walks while striking out two and not allowing a run in Thomas College’s 8-0 win in the opener over Wheelock College. Thomas also took the second game 28-1.

In the first game, Brielle Daggett tripled and doubled to drive in a run for Thomas and Mistie Bickford had a double and a single with two RBIs. Courtney Corbett hit a t riple to knock in two runs.

In the second game, Corbett allowed just one run on one hit and three walks while fanning six for Thomas. She also doubled with two RBIs. Debra Robertson doubled and singled and Charlee Hayes hit a double.

Keene State sweeps USM

At Keene, N.H., Saturday, Meghan McLoughlin allowed just four hits and one run while fanning 10 to help lead Keene State to the 2-1 win in the first game. The Owls also won the second game 5-1 to clinch the regular season Little East Conference Title.

In the first game, Kristen Tong hit a double in the fourth and later scored on a wild pitch for the University of Southern Maine.

In the second game, Renee Heath had three singles for the Huskies and Caterina Riitano hit two singles.

Colby sweeps St. Joseph’s tourney

At Standish Sunday, the White Mules continued a winning streak with a 7-2 victory over Bates and a 7-0 shutout of the Monks at the St. Joseph’s tourney. Brandeis edged St. Joseph’s 4-0 in the third game.

In the first game, Lauren Olmsted scattered five hits while rapping two singles and driving in two runs for Colby. Kate Hurd doubled and singled three times for the Mules.

In the second game, Miki Starr and Wendy Bonner of Colby both doubled. Bonner and Elizabeth Riley each had two RBIs. Jamie Morrison hit a pair of singles for St. Joseph’s.

In the third game, Emily Watterworth homered and singled for Brandeis.

Kahler Dowling hit a double for St. Joseph’s.

UM-Farmington sweeps Bay Path

At Farmington, Sunday, Stephanie Moriarty allowed no runs, three hits, and no walks while striking out eight to help the University of Maine- Farmington to the 10-0 win over Bay Path College in the first game. UM-Farmington also won the second game 12-1.

In the first game, Holly Tripp tripled and singled to drive in a pair of runs for UM-Farmington and Kristi Cochin hit a double and a single with two RBIs. Mary Berry doubled and scored three runs.

In the second game, Lauren Stacey and Sara Martin combined to throw a one-hitter for UM-Farmington. Erica Woodsum had two singles and scored two runs. Kristi Cochin and Cynthia Ravinski each singled to drive in two runs.

USM wins two

At Plymouth, N.H. Saturday, the Huskies pushed across 30 runs to sweep Plymouth State, 14-2 in the opener and 16-1 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Adam Lemieux had an RBI double and Greg Stacy an RBI single during a six-run eighth inning that turned a 3-2 game into a rout.

In the second game, Brandon Brewer hit two doubles while Stacy had a two-run double, two singles and four RBIs for USM of Gorham.

UMF , Husson split

At Farmington, Sunday, Zachary Reed hit three singles to help lead the University of Maine-Farmington to the 11-10 win over Husson College in the opener. The Braves took the second game 3-2.

In the first game, Justin Quimby had a pair of singles and scored three runs for UM-Farmington and Eric Cummings had two singles with six RBIs.

Adam Sheehan hit a home run with four RBIs for Husson and Scott Flannery doubled to drive in a pair of runs.

In the second game, Justin Spencer doubled and scored two runs for Husson College. Jason Folsom doubled and Bill Kane also had a double and knocked in a run.

UMF’s Quimby and Tom Danylik each had an RBI single.

At Gorham Sunday, Brandon Brewer led the Huskies with a three-run homer as USM took the first game of a doubleheader 10-2, and won the second game 19-12.

Tufts sweeps Colby

At Medford, Mass., the White Mules of Waterville only scored 11 runs in three games, losing twice to Tufts, 11-1 and 9-4 Saturday and 16-6 Sunday.

On Saturday, Andy Carr doubled and Brian Liberty drove him in with a single for Colby in the first game. In the second game, Carr knocked an RBI double and Tom Salemy an RBI single for the Mules.

On Sunday, Tom Salemy knocked a solo homer and Brian Liberty a three-run homer for Colby.
