BREWER – Chip Carson of Bangor captured his fourth state singles candlepin bowling title when he defeated Tim Matero of Augusta in the Maine Open State Championships at the Bangor-Brewer Bowling Lanes Sunday.

Carson rolled a 10-string total of 1,248 to edge Matero’s 1,214. It was the third runner-up finish for Matero.

Carson advanced by defeating Jim Singleton of Lisbon in Saturday’s semifinal round 1,233-1,178 while Matero edged Matt Rich of Oxford Hills Lanes in South Paris 1,244-1,220.

In the women’s finals, Carole Swenson of Saco collected her first state singles title by beating Judy Bowden of Augusta 1,173-1,129.

Swenson advanced by defeating Rick Justice of Augusta in the semifinals 1,222-1,166 while Bowden eliminated Karen Matero of Lisbon 1,165-1,076.
