PRESQUE ISLE – A two-story wood-frame home was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning despite the efforts of firefighters from the city and from Caribou.

Fire Chief Jim Krysiak said no cause had been determined. An investigator from the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office will be at the scene Monday to investigate.

When firefighters arrived at the 73 Chapman St. fire shortly after 12:15 a.m., flames were shooting from windows. Krysiak said a neighbor reported the fire.

“It had a real good start by the time we arrived,” Krysiak said. “The fire had vented itself and flames were coming through windows.”

The house, a short distance from the intersection of Main Street, was gutted. “The home is too damaged to be lived in,” the chief said.

Fire officials said the rented two-story structure is owned by Walter Gogan of Presque Isle.

Krysiak said mutual aid was received from the Caribou Fire Department. There were 27 firefighters and four trucks at the scene until 2:30 a.m.

No one was home at the time of the fire. Fire officials did not know who was renting the seven-room home. Krysiak said he didn’t know the building’s value.
