League-leader Albany takes three from Bears

ALBANY, N.Y. – Andrea Lindgren scattered four hits while striking out four and Ashley Rios went 3-for-3 with an RBI as the University of Albany softball team blanked Maine 2-0 Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep of the Black Bears.

The Great Danes won two games Saturday, both by 4-3 scores. Albany, which is now 12-1 in America East play, remains in first place in the conference. Maine’s 6-6 conference record drops the Bears to fifth in the standings.

In Sunday’s game, Rios’ single to right in the second inning drove in Liz Wieboldt for the winning run. Wieboldt had reached on a double.

Molly McKinney, Amy Kuhl, Lindsay Tibbetts and Erin Provost each singled for Maine. The Bears threatened in the fifth when Sara Asadoorian reached first on a fielder’s choice and advanced to third on two errors, but Lauren Dulkis grounded out to end the inning. Candace Jaegge gave up 10 hits in the loss.

In Saturday’s first game, Kelly Ogden’s single in the sixth plated Jen Nolette and broke a 3-3 tie.

Tibbetts hit an RBI single and Jess Brady tallied an RBI on a groundout for the Bears. Sarah Bennis gave up 11 hits and three earned runs in the loss.

In Saturday’s second game, Wieboldt had an RBI single in the 14th inning to lift the Great Danes.

Maine took a 3-0 lead in the first when Kuhl hit a three-run homer. Albany’s Ali Meacham tied it in the fourth with a two-run single. Maine’s Jenna Merchant picked up the loss, giving up 10 hits while walking five and striking out four in a complete game.
