PITTSFIELD – The Maine Army National Guardsman injured last week in an ambush and firefight in Iraq is relying less on a ventilator and could return stateside this week, his wife said Sunday.

Nanette Ardry said it still appeared her husband, Spc. Craig Ardry, would be flying from a hospital in Germany to the Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, as early as today. She said Army officials told her that her husband is on the flight list for Monday, although she is aware he could be bumped and delayed until Wednesday.

She said her husband is running a fever, but in what their families are taking as a good sign, Ardry is breathing more on his own and using the ventilator less.

Nanette Ardry said she and Craig’s mother, Carol Wyman, hope to leave for Texas on Thursday.

Ardry was one of four members of the 133rd Engineer Battalion of the Maine Army National Guard who were injured after a bomb exploded on a road outside Mosul last Tuesday. Spc. Christopher Gelineau of Portland was killed and two other Maine soldiers were injured, although they have since returned to duty.
