UMaine records two wins MacDonald earns fourth victory

VESTAL, N.Y. – Joe Hough hit a two-run triple and Matt McGraw drove in two runs on a double and two singles as the University of Maine baseball team earned an 8-4 win over Binghamton Sunday.

The Black Bears split Saturday’s America East doubleheader against the Bearcats, earning a 6-2 victory in the first game while falling 8-7 in the 12th innings in the second game.

Maine goes to 20-16 (5-4 in America East) while Binghamton falls to 16-12 (6-3).

In Sunday’s game, Hough’s double came in the third as the Black Bears took a 3-0 lead.

The Bearcats chipped away over the next three innings, cutting Maine’s lead to 5-4, but the Bears added two insurance runs in the eighth and another in the ninth.

Ryan Quintal hit an RBI single in the eighth and Aaron Izaryk recorded an RBI double in the ninth.

Mike Ferriggi hit three singles.

Greg Norton (4-5) picked up the win for Maine, striking out seven and walking one while scattering eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. Ryan Harris and Scott Robinson combined for 3 2/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief.

UMaine tacked on single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth.

T.J. Kowalchuk led Binghamton with two singles and an RBI.

In Saturday’s nightcap, the Bears scored twice in the top of the 12th to break a 5-5 tie, but the Bearcats rallied for three in the bottom of the inning to win it.

Quintal stroked four singles to pace UMaine’s 14-hit attack. Izaryk homered and singled with two RBIs, while Barrett, Creek and Williams hit two singles apiece.

The Bears took the lead in the 12th. Hough reached on an infield single with one out, then Creek and Barrett followed with singles to load the bases.

Izaryk pushed a run across with a fielder’s choice, then Quintal hit a runs-coring single to left field to make it 7-5.

Binghamton finally caught up with the UMaine bullpen when Jamie Grattelo walked Joe Costello and hit Jay Balback with a pitch. Harris came on and surrendered a bunt single to Matt Simek that loaded the bases.

Brian Lindsay delivered a two-run single to tie it and the winning run scored on an error by shortstop Mark Reichley.

UMaine starter Troy Martin was touched up for five runs in the first inning, including a three-run homer by Jamie Boyer. However, Martin responded by holding the Bearcats hitless for the next 6 2/3 innings. He struck out nine and walked four.
