White sparks Bangor sweep

BANGOR – Much like the weather that accompanied them, the two games of a doubleheader played by the Bangor and Presque Isle softball teams Saturday couldn’t have been more different.

The Rams edged the Wildcats 2-0 in the first game – a low-hitting affair marked by dark skies and intermittent rain showers – and in the second pounded out 12 hits under a bright sun and a blowing wind en route to an 11-7 victory at the Union Street Complex.

The one consistent element for the 2-0 Rams, however, was pitcher Kelly White. She tossed a three-hitter to win the first game and threw 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to help Bangor rally in the second game. White struck out 17 and walked one in 11 1/3 innings of work.

In the first game, White gave up a double and two singles, all to Presque Isle’s Shawna Nadeau, and allowed six baserunners.

The Ram defense twice threw out a lead runner. White credited the players behind her for the win.

“The first game really just pointed out how great our team is,” White said. “We had some great plays. They did all the work for me.”

Beth McGlinn came the closest to scoring for Presque Isle (0-2) when she worked a one-out walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. But White got a strikeout and induced a groundout to end the inning.

Bangor scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third. Jen Wright walked with one out, stole second, and advanced to third on an Erin Gray single. Gray then stole second, and after a flyout, Emily Heath singled to left-center to bring in both Wright and Gray.

Presque Isle’s Dani Grenier picked up the loss despite allowing just two Bangor hits and walking two. She was backed up by sharp defense as the Wildcats racked up 18 outs in the field.

In the second game, the Rams got key runs in the fourth and fifth innings as they rallied past the Wildcats.

“I don’t know if it was that they just relaxed, concentrated more, focused less on the weather,” Bangor coach Nancy Snowdeal said of the Rams’ offensive spark. “I was proud of them, the way they came back.”

Presque Isle started off with three runs in the first thanks to an RBI double by Kylee Pelletier and run-scoring singles from Dani Dyer and Hillary Harvey. The Rams answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning when two runs scored on two errors and Jamie Kowalski hit an RBI double.

The Wildcats piled on two more runs in each of the second and third innings for a 7-3 lead, but Bangor tied it in the bottom of the fourth.

After Kowalski hit a line-drive single to lead off the inning, the Rams laid down three straight bunt singles, followed by a sacrifice bunt. The hits, sacrifice, a passed ball, and an error combined to score four runs.

“It was working and I guess it’s been one of my strengths, so we went with it,” said Bangor’s Ilyse Angst, whose bunt single plated Kowalski.

In the fifth inning, Steph Chase and Kowalski both singled and eventually scored on an error to provide the winning and insurance runs. Bangor added two more runs in the sixth.

“I think they kind of got used to [Grenier], plus we didn’t make the plays when we needed to,” Presque Isle coach Alan Curtis said. “There was some [missed] coverage there at first. It wasn’t like the first game. It’s disappointing, though, to lose. We didn’t come down here to win two games.”

White relieved Bangor starter Katy MacDonald, who allowed nine hits and seven runs in 2 2/3 innings.

“She was prepared to go in and pitch,” Snowdeal said. “She seemed more in control, more focused. She seemed more confident. And we really gave her the support she needed.”

Katie Delong led Presque Isle with three singles and an RBI. Dyer drove in two runs and Pelletier added a single.
