Former University of Maine quarterback Jake Eaton has signed a contract with the Canadian Football League champion Edmonton Eskimos, a team spokesman confirmed Tuesday. Eaton, a 6-foot-2, 215-pounder from Rutland, Vt., will report to the Eskimos’ training camp beginning May 22.
Eaton had a superb career at UMaine, where he ranks third all-time in passing yards (7,145) and touchdown passes (58). His senior season in 2002, when he was an Atlantic 10 third-team pick, ended prematurely when he suffered a torn knee ligament. Eaton is expected to compete with veterans Bart Hendricks (Boise State) and Jason Maas (Oregon) after Eskimos starter Ricky Ray signed with the NFL’s New York Jets.
