BANGOR – Dr. Thaddeus Jozefowicz, 61, a prominent neurologist, died of cancer Wednesday morning in Bangor.
A noted practitioner and teacher in his decade at Acadia Hospital, Jozefowicz was also known for his openness about being a recovering narcotics addict.
It was an addiction that at its worst saw him face charges for possession of pills over a three-year period while a partner at Neurology Associates.
After entering rehabilitation, Jozefowicz was given probationary privileges at Acadia in 1994, and regular privileges in 1995.
That same year he appeared in U.S. District Court, agreeing to serve two years of probation and 500 hours of community service, and to pay a $5,000 fine and court costs.
In addition, he spent five years in the Maine Medical Association’s program for impaired physicians, designed to return doctors to productive lives.
He was chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for the Secretary of State, Department of Motor Vehicles, for several years.
Jozefowicz had a special interest in electroshock therapy and frequently was asked to speak on neurology by professional associations.
“The entire Acadia Hospital family mourns the loss of our colleague and friend Ted Jozefowicz, M.D., and our condolences go out to his family,” said Acadia Hospital’s medical director, Dr. Paul Tisher. “Dr. Jozefowicz worked for almost 10 years at Acadia as a neurologist, and his sense of humor and clinical abilities will be greatly missed by Acadia staff and patients.”
Jozefowicz, who had lived in Maine since 1975, was active in the community, having been a cantor at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary, and serving the Boy Scouts.
He was also an accomplished pianist and spoke several languages.
Since being diagnosed with cancer, he had faced his illness positively and with determination.
Jozefowicz is survived by his wife, Elaine; by sons Jonathan and Thaddeus Jr.; and by a brother.
Calling hours will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Brookings-Smith on Center Street.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Ohio Street.
Gifts in his memory may be sent to New Hope Hospice, P.O. Box 757, Holden, Maine 04429.
