Southern Maine takes 2 in Little East tourney

KEENE, N.H., the University of Southern Maine Huskies of Gorham won twice in extra innings, 2-1 over Eastern Connecticut in 20 innings in the opener and 2-0 over Keene State in 11 innings in the nightcap in the Little East softball tournament Thursday.

In the first game, the game-winner was scored when Jen Cordone was plunked by a pitch to force in the game-winner.

Melissa Henderson pitched eight innings of shutout ball, and Renee Heath added a solo homer.

In the second game, Caterina Riitano hit an RBI single and Emily Forbes added a key insurance run with a single of her own in a win over top seed Keene State.

Henderson pitched a complete game for USM, scattering just four hits and picking up her second win of the day.

At Gorham, Tip Fairchild stroked a three-run homer to cap a five-run fifth inning for the Huskies.

Ryan Bourque added an RBI triple and Adam Lemieux a two-run double for the winners.

Andy Exley hit a two-run triple for the Monks of Standish.
